I am looking at a 1952 MG TD to buy. I have very little experience in that year car. I would very much like to talk with someone that has knowledge in that area. It would be even better if we could talk by phone. I have a lot of questions. 304 647 3446
Thanks so much.

How much, check for rotted wood underneath just inside running boards. Is it original or restored. What do you plan to do with it. Sagging doors, Rust in seams etc.

Jim, the two biggest dollar issues with a TD are without a doubt the wood and the engine in that order. I find this board very active for the MGB (I have a 69) but would suggest you check out the MG Enthusist Club site (it's free). Click ont the BBS and scroll down to the TD-TF listings and you will be able to get a wealth of info from quite a number of members. Several of which are in your area.

Jim,

I'll try to get back to you tonight with some answers. I am not trying to avoid the question but family matters have had me in a bit of a turmoil lately and I'm a litlle behind on answering my E mails.

Bear with me,

Jim,

As was suggested the wood parts are the most important and the most difficult to get at to replace. They are available but are costly and you need some skill to replace wood in a T series car. It's also difficult fitting old sheet metal to new wood and takes some"persuading" Been there done that so I know from whence I speak. Second the doors (almost impossible to find a good used set) and all the other major sheet metal. Replacement parts are available but are very costly and again require a lot of skill to replace. Mechanical parts are not too hard to come by but can get $$$$$ and engine rebuilding is not all that difficult. Top Bows and side curtain frames are not that easy to come by either and I'd rather start with a complete set of original ones to repair than try to get "new" and fit them to the body.
Keep Abingdon Spares in mind if you do get a T series for parts. They've always been good for me but I haven't had any recent dealings with them.
If you do get a T series car make sure you get the proper whitworth set of tools. Life is a lot easier if you have them. Also a set of W hitworth taps and dies come in handy if you're doing a complete restoration. Check out British Fasteners on the internet. They have a really good selection of Whitworth tools and fastners.
If I can be of any other help pleas let me know. I'll do my best to be available for info.
Thanks also for you patience,

George
