I'm a channeled, tunnel vision "B" guy as most of us are. What does the A stand for anyway? Allmost? I'll bet somebody has the answer. TONY! You awake?

okay, 15GB was of course a 1500 engine that started production during June 1957 (chassis #33000)...prior to that time all mga 1500 engines were numbered "BP15GB"...so, that engine is a June '57 to early-'59 engine as 15GB only lasted until Jan '59 (chassis # 61504) when the engine changed to a 15GD....15GD lasted until May '59 when they brought out the 1600 engine....by the way, that particular engine is a high compression model & has the low starter position.....and, that's the truth!!!

I am not switching guys. I just picked it up for $50 and figure I can use some of the parts and trade or sell the rest. The body is crap and looks as if someone poured salt over it every few years. It's been setting for 20+ years. The guy could not remember how long for sure.

Blake:

Does it still have the tranny?

I'm looking for a tranny bellhousing with the low starter position to replace my crack housing.

Thanks,
Steve

It has the drive train from engine to rear end. Not sure yet what I can use from it for my 63B yet. I am hoping the tranie is good and is the same as the Bs.
Any advise on what I should keep drivetrain wise?
Are the 1500 heads useable on an early 1800 3-main.
Carbs and intake? Crankshaft? Fly wheel? Rear end?
Oil pan? Ect....
I don't have an "A" catalog to cross part #s yet...

Tony not much of what your looking for. The wind screen frame is good as well as the dash. steering wheel is aftermarket 12" wheel. Hood is good but thats about the only body part that is not rusted and too far gone. No grill either. Tail lights are in fine shap. Steering rack is tight as far as I can tell. Brake drums ???? Frames for alluminum doors and trunk lid are rusted to nothing but the skins are fine.

Blake:

You probably would not want to use the A head on a B. This would lower the performance. Although many people will put a B head on an A for better breathing.

Cam, carbs, and intake you should be able to use with no problem. Exhaust manifold on the A is probably a little more restrictive than the B.

You may be able to use the crank for a 3 main but I am not 100% sure. May take a re-grind.

The tranny is similar design - with no syncro on 1st. However, the 1622 MGA mark 2 is a little closer design as it has the different tail end I think the input shaft matches the early B.

To make a early MGA tranny work you would have to use the back plate flywheel (which is heavier, B is better), clutch plate (10 spline - not like a B) and pressure plate. You would also have to use the A driveshaft. There may be other things I'm missing.

The MGA should have a 4.3 diff. which could swap with an early B pumpkin. The B 3.9 is better for highway driving. The 4.3 might be better for rallying.

Anyway, feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or if you want to let the tranny go.

Thanks,
Steve

If you ask Moss, they will send you catalogues for all of our favorites, and they list a lot of that info in the front just like with the Bs.

True....but they don't go nearly into the details of the MGB catalog...I have a book titled "BMC & Leyland B-series Engine Data" that I use for lots of stuff...it has inof on all the engines used in all the British cars that were based on the engine.
