Good morning all-
Does anyone have a early MGA 1500 splined (slip-on) driveshaft for sale.
Kindly PM with details, my zip is 11791 (metro NYCity) for shipping estimate.
Thanks, Lee B.

Is there a difference between 1500 and 1600

Gil-
I didnt think so until-
I purchased a 'rebuilt' MGA tranny from a very nice elderly gentleman a year or so ago at British Invasion at Stowe. At that time time, to me a MGA box is a MGA box, good for all years MGA.
I finally got around to installing the box, only to learn that my car, an MGA 1600 has a flanged output shaft while the 1500 has a splined output shaft and utilizes a 'slip-on' spline on the driveshaft. Of course the rebuilt box I had purchased has the splined output shaft. Hence I need the splined driveshaft. I cant change the tailpieces because later MGA boxes have a larger output shaft bearing, so the tailpieces are not interchangable.
So, do you happen to have an extra splined MGA driveshaft?
Regards, Lee B.

It may be just as cheap to take your drive shaft to a driveline shop and they can cut your ends off and put them on a new tube.

There are two entirely different drive shafts, and a "chop" suggested by Lee isn't feasonable. I have a perfectly good 1500 shaft available for free, but postage to USA may be a bit on the expensive side. I can get a postage cost for you if nothing turns up locally.

Lee-
Sounds like a plan.
The only trouble is Mr. Moss says the splined nose-piece of the driveshaft is "N/A".
Back to square one.

Gary-
Thanks very kind of you. Let me know the postage cost to my zipcode 11791 (metro New York City). If you have the piece handy, and can let me know the weight, i'll find out the cost of international UPS.

I will look and take a photo of the one I have but if i have one it is a 1600 shaft with flanges on both ends with the slide in the middle.

There are three different propshafts used for MGA, including two different front splined assemblies. The one noted above on eBay is the mid-1500 style. To determine which splined propshaft you need requires a look at the tail end of the gearbox. For differences see here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/propshaft/ps101.htm

I do have a spare mid-1500 type propshaft, would sell for $30 +shipping. My spare early 1500 type propshaft is reserved for use with a spare early type gearbox.

I wonder if you could convert the 1500 to 1600 by changing main shaft and rear housing.

Yes. But that is a lot of work.

The 1500 went to a flanged style shaft at the 15GD power unit in 1959 or so.

Gil-
I didnt mean the driveshaft but the rear casing of the MGA 1600 transmission housing.
do you recall if it ever had a flanged output shaft?
thanks, lee

The 1600 always had a flanged main shaft termination, as did all late 1500s as well.

You'd have to get a new main shaft and rear housing and swap all the guts over - big job.

I don't recall mentioning the MGB parts. But they certainly won't work with any tail housing not set up for a flange and normal seal. They will interchange with any nonsynchro box, but I'd want to check the diameters of the front spigot on them (the one that the input shaft goes onto) to make sure there were no running changes in bearings or diameter. I don't think there were. Barney may know, offhand.
