can you please tell me if a newer mgb can be fitted with a grille & bumper from an older chrome front car?

I have a 62-69 grille in a 71 BGT, so yes. Chrome bumper conversions of rubber bumper cars also end up with chrome bumper grilles, but I don't know hwat is required. There is a conversion site listed on the main page of this site.

It would be a very involved job. The fenders are different, and the way the bumpers attach is very different. The parking lights are different as well. Then when you get to the back bumper there is a lot of differences there as well. Another thing for it to look right you would need to lower the car.

Ditto Tom...And after I read the conversion article it's also real hard on the checkbook. If you just have to have a chrome bumper car look around and buy one. I kinda like the rubber bumpers. Especially in traffic and parking lots and the extra height means you can go in deeper snow...

Dan, if you haven't had your rubber B very long you may want to lower it one inch and give yourself some time to get used to it. I used to like the chromies best, but ended up rebuilding a rubber one. After a couple of years and a few shows where I saw lots of MGs in batches I grew to like my rubber B best.

Must agree w/ John D. I've really come to love my rubber 'B'yet when first they came out I went 'ugh'I also have dropped mine an inch or so.

I agree that rubber is more practical in the city & the extra height helps in parking lots with speed bumps.

The chrome brings you closer to the feeling of old British Heritage. Perhaps it is more at home on a windy country blacktop.

Regardless, I wouldn't convert either way, as they are both "true" and "proper" MGs

Sorry John, I was just joking, but I definitely prefer the chrome bumper cars to the rubber bumper ones. It is, of course personal preference. But I do agree, it doesn't make sense to try and change a rubber bumper car to a chrome bumper car, any more than it makes sense to try and make a 'Boss 302' out of a standard mustang or a 'SS' out of a standard Chevelle. Sorry if I insulted anybody!!!

Here is another idea use chrome paint and paint the rubbber bumpers. I have a 77 that I have painted the same color as the car flamenco red it gives it what I call a euro look and many look and say theer is something different but just cannot notice the bumpers are not the ugly black

There's a woman in our local club the repainted her "Rubbie" Viper yellow including the rubber bumpers. Looks sharp. Don't know what special paint was used, but I know that it takes a special process to paint the rubber correctly.

preparation is the key to painting rubber bumpers I finally had to replace the front bumper as I could not get rid of the years of armor all and other cleaning products that has absorbed into the bumper that done now the bumpers look great and are standing up well 4 years and counting

I read somewhere that good rubber Bs are getting hard to find in their homeland because so many have been converted to Chrome. Is there anything to this? Monotoning rubber bumpers is ok, I considered it when doing my car, but be carefull of the color. Monotoning seems to work well with some colors, but looks like hell with white, (I've seen one), yellow may be ok, (haven't seen one), some dark red-tint colors look real good. Paint addatives for flexable bumpers is easy tho get now, all the new cars have flex bumpers now.

It was a white car with the bumpers painted white that first caught my eye it looked good it also had the inserts in the rostyle wheels painted white instead of black I had planned to do that with my wheels got them stripped ready for painting and was using a friends set of minilites and I fell in love with the look of the minilites so bought my own set for less than $100.00 per wheel which I have since found out was a great deal traded a set a rostyle wheels for an oak octagon to display my rally plaques on that fits on top of spare in trunk yet under the cover

That sounds like the car I saw in Memphis about 5 years ago and I 'bout puked.

Go for it! I'm in the middle of it as we speak. It's really not that hard. If you have basic courage you can do it. I'm converting to a sebring kit instead. It's just bodywork instead of bumpers! And it looks so clean.

I like the look but should I want to sell the car dont think there would be as much interest in it

Just curious, do you (Phil) have a picture of your car posted anywhere on the internet? I'm curious what it looks like. In fact, anyone who has customized their car -- if you have pictures, you shoud let us know the address.

Depending on the condition of your 'rubbers',I always felt they looked real good on the darker body colors but really 'chopped' up the shape of the cars w/ light colors. My car is russet and (I think) looks great, sleek and streamlined w/ smooth, black rubbers.Case you can't tell, I love my car.
