MGB: MGB Rear Diff Plug

Greetings,

Have developed a small drip in the bottom drain plug in the rearend. Planning on pulling it out and wrapping with teflon tape and refilling...Will this work? It drips maybe 4-6 drops a day.

Now the important part. What size is the plug cavity and where do I get something to remove the drain and fill plugs? I tried 3/8" drive (too small) and 1/2" (too big), I need something that's just right!

Thanks, Floyd

I took an old 1/2" extention and ground it down on my grinder to fit the plug. Not more than a 1/16th off each side. Flatten out the end on the grinder as well so it goes into the plug further.

The teflon tape trick worked for me. Blake's got you fixed up otherwise.

While you're under the car make sure that the breather on the top of the axle housing is not clogged; if it is pressure will build up in the housing and cause leaks.

I ground off the threaded part of a bolt, 1/2 diameter, 3/4 in long, I believe.

I had this old 1/2 inch breaker bar that had the little ball that holds the socket on broken off. It fit fine!

Teflon tape may work, but it is not very good at stopping oil. Teflon repels water very well, but oil or other liquids with low surface tension will wick through it and eventually leak again. A better bet is non-hardening gasket material or other joint compound that is made for petroleum products.

.. just do not use the silicone sealer.. use permatex#2 or the equivalant..
