Okay. I picked out the bike I want - Suzuki TU250X and will take the training course next Spring. What can I expect to pay for insurance for a late '50s person. My wife might take the course too so she'll need insurance.

Not sure as the last bike I insured was in the mid 80's. I went with Dairyland. Good price at the time. I tried Gieco and the wanted 1800.00 which was half the price of the bike at that time.
In my part of the world, motorcycle insurance is quite reasonable, I think. I insure an '06 Kawasaki Concours sport touring (1000 cc/120 hp) for $420/year and includes collision ($500 deduct. those plastic bits costs are outrageous), liability and comprehensive. Generally, cost goes up as the engine displacement/horsepower increases. My son lives in British Columbia (he's in his mid-30s) and pays $1200 for liability and comp. on a late model BMW dual sport 650 cc. Of course, he can ride about 11 months/year while I can get only about 6.5-7 months/year.
I found out with my last bike that a lot of major companies like Geico (which is what I use on the cars) will only insure motorcycles with full coverage on everything including gear with a low deductable. Which means they are not the cheapest bike insurance, Might check with a company like progressive or a small insurance company. When I insured my last bike all I was looking for was liability coverage. Only had a total investment of $500 into the bike including the purchase price so I wasn't looking for a lot of coverage. They wanted more than I had into the bike for insurance rates. If I wrecked it I wasn't too concerned with replacing it if it was my fault. I still have that motorcycle tucked away in the corner of my garage, haven't rode it in years and it will need work to be road worthy again. It qualifies as an antique now. 1980 Yamaha XS650 Special II. Been thinking about pulling it out and restoring it over the winter. There's a decent market for these bikes now. Stopped riding it years ago as it was a luxury item for me and I was a full time student just retired from the military and didn't have a lot extra to spend on luxury items. Then got a job out of town and commuted home on weekends for over a year before moving the family to where I am now. By that time it needed some work to be ridable so I just tucked it away in the corner of the garage where it still is.
I use Markel American Insurance Co., out of Pewaukee, WI for my '98 HD Fatboy...it's about $350 year. They can be reached at
1-800-236-2453.
We added a Honda 1983 750cc interceptor for my 22 year old son to our car policy.
Price for liability only was $200.. Cincinnati Insurance.
I ride a 2002 Yamaha 650, have taken a safety course, AARP member thru Progressive Insurance, and pay about $114.00 a year. Cheap and full coverage. Don't know your age, but you can see the ad in the AARP magazine, if you receive such stuff....Mitch
I'm 58 and an AARP member. I'll look in the mag. That sounds very reasonable.

Obviously a man of taste!
I have a 2000 Connie, and a 1978 KZ650. I insure both with Progressive - the Connie (ZG1000) is $150 and the KZ is $105 - but then I am 58 and have had a motorcycle license for over 40 years! In the past I have used GEICO too - and found their rates very reasonable. Age of rider is probably a bigger factor than bike value, and bike style more a factor than displacement.
Those new Suzy 250s look like a cool bike!
