I have an optical type mouse and occasionally the cursor just jumps off the page!
It's not too annoying yet but try to draw a line using "paint" feature and all of a sudden the line shoots off the page. Now that's trouble. Do I need a new one?

Yep, I had a mouse that did that too, a new one cured the problem.
Thanks Mike, I didnt know if this was a mouse or puter problem.

Robert, have you cleaned yours lately? A bit of lint will cause the problem. Pop the ball out and clean EVERYTHING with denatured alcohol then wipe down with a LINT FREE cloth.

Yep, I don't think any mice have balls these days. :D
My 2 cents;
I'm not very happy with Logitech products. My Optical wireless mouse with the "nano" usb connector lasted 6 months. I also have one of their all in one superduper remotes for the TV/audio, etc. It's about a year old. Now it's not fitting into its cradle properly for recharging (bad design) and the volume buttons work half the time. $150.00 remote and now it's crap.

The basics of this advice is still sound even if the reasons behind it are not. Your optical mouse will still get grotty and should be cleaned carefully with a clean cotton bud and a little alcohol.
Also be careful with the surface glaze and colour of the mouse working area. I have found that a clean sheet of white paper gives the best response from an optical mouse.
