While working on the tank vapor line (a PO had rapped tape around it to seal a self-inflicted puncture -- not working) near the fuel pump I found a small dia plastic tube that was running from near the pump and terminating just inside the frame rail. Thinking it might attached to the pump I looked for possible location. I could not see or feel anything on the pump. The pump does not look like the original - too clean. Was there once a vent tube for the pump or was ther another purpose for it? There is a grommet in the frame that the tube goes through.

Yes - there are actually two vent tubes that should attach to the pump. The one I think you found is (at least on my car) clear plastic and attaches to a barb right near the seam of the pump - i.e., where the screws hold the valve body to the diaphragm/solenoid assembly. It is kind of hard to see but it is there. There is another hose that goes right on the end of the pump (near where the + wire connects).

It is not necessary to attach a vent tube to the tent on the end cover, it has a check valve on it to allow air to be expelled only. See the article, SU Fuel Pump Vents in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/
Cheers,

Got it thanks Dave. The vent is on the top right. Knowing it was there I finally felt it and was able to cut off the brittle piece that remained. I used some irrigation tubing as you have done.
Thanks all.
