Hi All,
Changed the oil on my recently acquired '67 B-GT. It has the original hanging Tecalemit filter. I had ordered a couple of the felt type filters from Moss before the car arrived, but when I got this one off found that the PO had used a NAPA Gold 1300 filter element. Any thoughts on if one is better than the other? Thanks, Dale

I've just finished overhauling my engine which has had the original felt type filter on it for as long as I've owned the car. I regularly changed the oil and always cleaned the filter well with Varsol. I changed the element with a new felt several years ago also. While disassembling the engine and looking at the wear on the many parts I was astonished to see how much wear was caused by grit. I have no idea how the previous owner cared for the car in terms of oil changes etc. but I would have expected the filter to catch most of what did the damage. I've changed the filter housing to accomodate a NAPA filter which is what I'll use from here on in. I guess time will tell if it's better or not, but it certainly can't be worse.

The amount of dirt and dust that will get ingested in an engine in England is nothing compared to what you will get in Arizona. A felt filter that is good enough for the Brits won't do in AZ.

I've seen bearing scoring which with minute inspection revealed small felt fibers.

I'm a fan of paper, not felt.

I'm just curious but are you saying that you reused the felt filter for several years at a time?
(I'm not trying to be rude, I don't know if that is the recommended procedure because I have always used later spin on type filters, just curious)

I can see where you might have been concerned with this fact, but I should have stated that while I've had the car on the road, I've only ever managed to get about 200 miles per driving season on the car. When I'd drop the oil in the fall before storage, I'd wash out the filter just on spec. When I got to the requisite change period, I put a new filter in. Sorry for the confusion.

Convert the hang-down canister to a hang-down spin-on and use Wix filters. If your is an upside down canister type convert as soon as possible.

Yeah, change to the spin-on filters. The adapter is only about 30 bucks or so from Moss. The old canisters are not that good.
