i have a 71 midget, the fuel gauge isn't working, so i looked at the wiring diagram and it shows a bi-metal voltage stabilizer, so far i haven't located it. i did trace one of the wires from the gauge under the dash to its end, near the glove box and found another wire starting there. one has a male end and the other a female end spade connector. so i turned on the key and measured voltage it showed 11.87 on the wire i found so i connected and the gauge went up to quarter tank (probably about right). so my question is, is this were the stabilizer goes or do these just get connected. i didnt start the car with the wires connected incase a spike in volts would hurt anything.

Sounds like you are missing the regulator. Since the reading of the gauge is proportional to a reference voltage, it is important that the reference voltage be stable. You will have a woring gauge if you bypass, but the gauge reading will change with charging voltage or low battery.

If I recall correctly the stabilizer was located up under the passenger side of the dash board. I don't know if that is historically correct or not but I am pretty sure that is were I ended up hooking mine in.
