MGB: Need Recommendation for Exhaust System

Hi all. I have a 73 MGB GT that I bought from a friend (and original owner) recently - it's been sitting in a barn for 5 years and is in remarkably good shape. 50k miles. No overdrive.

I'm nearly finished going through it and doing some maintenance and upgrades. I put a new Weber downdraft carb and a 3-1 header on it - the original exhaust was filled with acorns and a squirrel's nest.

So now I've got a header and nothing else on it. I have an independent muffler shop nearby that will custom make anything I want. On previous B's I've owned I just run a pipe back to an inexpensive muffler - sounded fine. I'm not interested in buying an exhaust system off the shelf.

What would you all recommend I have them make for me?

I'm a new member - sorry if this issue has been hashed out already - I couldn't find much using the search function.

PECO PECO PECO.!!!!

THE BEST YOU CAN BUY! The Peco Header is awesome too, and a great addition, but, if you just use the peco exhaust that's fine too.

You can actually FEEL the difference. I'm told that the gain is 5-7 HP over the stock system. I don;t have any actual number to that effect personally, but, you'll definitely feel the difference.

I've actually scared the crap out of people walking behind the car when I rev up the motor and the PECO slammed so much air back on their leg that they've jumped.

It's arguably the BEST you can buy for an MGB.

Using the search function will reveal tons of recent info on this.

Sounds like you have the right idea. You have a header in place you want to keep, just do a single muffler.

I have two glass packs welded in place, one in front of the other. Great flow, but maybe a little loud for some. Nice ground clearance with this setup.

Ansa is a good one also....

If you go stainless, I can't recommend UK-made Bell highly enough over S&S or Falcon. Bell headers and exhausts actually fit, and they seem to last.

I have a one muffler at the back system. It's a little melodious but not too loud. The best thing is I don't drag over speed bumps or anything else..

I like my Bell also.

I agree. I absolutely love the PECO and it was extremely simple for me to install myself.

Since you have the header already go 2" pipe back to your single muffler and you will be fine.

I have had a Peco complete system on for a few years now, it has been trouble free.

I'm not sure your question can be answered. If the local guy is going to make you something than he can follow the undercarriage molds, go up over the axle and exit the rear.

Then your muffler choices are limited to what you can find at Advanced Auto etc.

Do you want a loud growl, or do you want to be more stately. Then find you something that accomplishes that and fits in the space provided.

I have had stock, Ansa, Peco, cherry bomb and straight pipe.

Cherry bomb was my favorite, but a bit annoying over time. I think you should give it a little bite - it is a sportscar :)

Liking to listen to the blues on my Sirius radio, I prefer the relative quiet of a stock system...

The Tourist Trophy exhaust from Moss was too loud, so I crammed a couple of stainless steel scouring pads into the muffler and held them there with a coathanger piece. I know, I'm an idiot.
