Just got my new Road and Track today. Peter Egan's Side Glances is about Lucas electrics. He said he had a couple of Bs in the early 70s.

I used to enjoy Road and Track but drifted away as they seemed to concentrate on the high end cars. I know I liked reading articles by Peter Egan and Henry Manney. Henry Mannings remark on the Porsche 914 - "Of all the slab sided motorized ashtrays!"
I just finished reading Peter’s R&T article too. I had to laugh - very humorous. ;)
Bad rap or not Peter has it correct when he says that Lucas electronics problems aren’t that hard to diagnose if you have volt/ohm meter. Just make sure you have a reasonably accurate (& understandable) schematic. This is especially true when you compare them to their modern counterparts.
Egan had a B in the early 90s, I know. He worked at a British Car shop at one pointt, too... he knows his Brit iron. Too bad Road & Track is, as Dave said, way too interested in high end cars. At least it's not as bad as Automobile, which is the tops when it comes to snooty brie-eating eltists disguising themselves as car folk.
On the other hand, there's way too many car magazines aimed at satisfying masturbatory teenage Fast and Furious fantasies, too. Bah.
Anyway, Egan's always been one of the best automotive writers, and the high point of R&T. Back when they had him AND Charles Fox regularly contributing, it was definitely worth reading.

I need to go see if there is a "Nigel Shiftright" cartoon this month.
I used to love to read Peter Egan's articles. He was always draging home some poor British car to fix up. When Road and Track started getting away from LBC's he still wrote about them. And I was surprised to find an artilce by him once in a motorcycle magazine (can't remember which one now). Apparently he owned several motorcycles and of course some of them were British.
I own the 1968 MGB he worked on in the "Affordable Classics" areticles in the late 80's. November 88'' issue

Peter Egan has been writing a regular column in "Cycle World" for as long as I can remember, with the occasional feature article thrown in.
Peter Egan is IMHO the best writer on cars and motorcycles alive today. In fact, one of the best writers, period.
Part of his charm is that he comes across just like the guy next door, who restores old cars, rides motorcycles and plays in a garage band. I suspect he is a fascinating person to talk with and hope to meet him someday.
Every month when I get my R&T, I read Side Glances before anything else,.
