Just installed my new steering rack (Moss, Agentina-made) on my '77. Did the alignment per the John Twist video (i.e. assistant turning back and forth, shimming when any binding felt) vs. the factory alignment tools. Never felt any resistance, so did not do any shimming. Is this too good to be true?
To be fair, I did not find any shims (to best of my knowledge) when I removed the original, but since then I've blasted and repainted the cross member, fitted new crossmember pads, and am using a new replacement rack. So I expected to need some adjusting.
In case it matter, I've not yet connected the rack to the swivel axles, etc. - just the rack by itself...
What say the experts?
Thx
Bob

I'm by no means an expert, but I would say that you should enjoy this small victory. If it's all bolted down and turns freely with no binding etc. then you're good to go. This being said with luck like this, you might want to consider getting a few lottery tickets too. (imagine all the parts that you could buy with the winnings!!)
I really think you should have the tie rod ends connected to test it properly Bob. I have never used John Twists method just the alignment tools.
I removed my entire front suspension for a rebuild and when I put the rack back on I noticed the steering was harder to turn than normal while driving. This was puzzling because it seemed to turn just fine on jack stands. I ended up shimming the rack, even though nothing was replaced but x-member pads and bushings. This help alot and now its all good.
