Got a new 14" leather Mountney steering wheel from VB and the adaptor that came with it is pictured below. It will extend the steering wheel 1 1/2" up toward the driver versus the stock steering wheel. I wanted to make sure this is the correct adaptor before I drill a hole in it for the horn wire. Anybody else install one of these and does the extended length cause any issues? thanks, Phil

Just my personal opinion here Phil, but having the wheel closer to my chest would not be acceptable.

Before committing to the thing, I would remove my existing wheel and hold the new assembly in the "finished" position to make sure that I didn't find my elbows bent too much or have the rim too close to my teeth.

Get the wheel too close and your elbows foul on the door in the event of emergency maneuvers

Phil,

Now that I see the side view of your adaptor, it's clearly a lot different than the version they were selling when I got mine. My guess is that this welded assembly of stamped parts and the center machined piece are less expensive than the casting they used to use.

In any case, the total depth of my hub is 2 1/2". Guessing from your picture, the new adaptor looks to be the same. I never thought to check to see if my Mountnoy wheel is closer to me than the stock wheel was, but I can tell you that mine is not uncomfortable. If the old and new hubs are the same depth, then one has to believe that there's not a real problem. There are a bunch of Mountnoys installed on Bs in this world, and I've never heard anyone complain.

BTW, what are the two holes adjacent to the splined hole for?

I have a one inch homemade adapter on my Nardi wheel. You will gain legroom, but the wheel will higher as well as closer. I think the 1.5 inch spacer will place the steering wheel higher than you really want.

Looks like we bought the same wheel. Mine is a 79 and I measured the old wheel from the dash and the new wheel from the same location and mine was only 1/2" difference closer to the driver. Maybe the wheel design of the 79 was dished differently than the 74. It works fine for me. The only difference that I noticed was that it is a little harder to trip the turn signal with my finger. That 1/2" was just far enough to notice but I am slowly getting used to it.

Phil;
Looks like a bad idea. Typical VB trying to skimp and scam. Get your money back.

I've got the same one, but a 13" wood wheel, which puts it just about in the right place to still be able to see the gauges. I have had no problem with the reach, as I have my seat back as far as it will go, so that my legs aren't too bent while driving. Also, with the 13" wheel, having it a bit closer makes it much easier to turn. I actually like it this way, because I can rest my elbow on the door and still be able to reach the wheel, not to mention the extra leg room. An all around win-win for me.
