tinkering under the hood today..
The belt was slipping and making that high pitched squeal(skreeeeching sound). It was annoying and something I will take care of. Didn't think it was deafening but.. 8 hours later I still have trouble hearing; just about everything is muffled now and there is a bad ringing in my left ear.
The lesson, be careful and think about ear plugs when under the hood if it is noisy.

You're right Gleason! That high pitched sound is a belt. That high pitched "SKReeeeeching" noise, on the otherhand, could be a brake problem like i have. I would take Tom's advice and put mothballs, garlic, and cayenne pepper under my hood and bonnet, and a cover over all unless you drive it twice a week. John Weimer can help on that topic. What kind of brake fluid do you use?
A shot of belt dressing will work wonders untill you can replace that slick belt. I also beadblast my pullies to roughen them up just a bit so the belt will not slip and then overheat and then get slick.
Hell, my pulleys are chrome plated and never squeel. Get a good Dayco belt and put it on.l
Sam.. This is a noise while the hood is up and my head is next to the motor. The car is sitting still so it is not the brakes making that noise. Brake fluid.. hmm, should check that soon, gotta get the brakes unstuck anyway. Car hasn't moved around much, up and down the driveway once a month or so, if that.
