MGB: NOW! We have headlights

After installing Limey's relays I was still disappointed with the output. So I switched to 60/65 Halogen bulbs with the P45t base for the CIBIE holders. STILL not enough brilliance.

So I tested the bulbs direct to battery. BRILLIANT.

The wires had to be the problem. So I cut off the headlamp plugs, stripped and cleaned the wires [they really need to be replaced but that will have to wait until I order some new wire], polished the tips, remounted 'newly' cleaned plugs from the old parts car and NOW WE HAVE LIGHTS!

A SIGNIFICANT difference. The plugs were simply draining too much juice and in reality it was the one on the right, but I replaced them both.

yes, dirty connections can result in significant voltage drop.....also small gauge wire, or long runs can result in noticeable drop...

when i re-wired my car, i installed relays, and for the headlamps used 14 gauge marine cable (tinned to reduce corrosion and slightly heavier than automotive)...i also eliminated the headlamp connector, and soldered the wire directly to the lamp terminal.....i left a couple of inches extra wire so if i ever have to remove/replace the lamps there is plenty remaining to resolder again

Pete- I thought you installed the Advance Autowire harness on your B. Did you not choose to do the headlight option? Rich

Rich, the Advance kit was used in his roadster. I have seen the installation, very nice. I think these lights that he is talking about are in his new Gee--Tee..

Don, you are correct. This is on the GT that I am preparing for winter use.
