1983 ex-british army, seems to have served abroad cos it was painted safari colour at one stage.
Drives ok but needs a new exhaust downnpipe.
Needs some work ( exhaust, paint and electrics)
but its a pretty cool buy i think.
What do you guys think? any suggestions on paint? leave it Matt or spray it a nice colour? i kinda like it rough and ready myself, just might clean it up a little

I like the ex-mods - meant to be scruffy. leave it as is. Worst thing I've seen are shiny lwb defenders with every expedition bit available tacked on - driving in downtown Chicago - where it's biggest outing will be to the suburbs.
yeah yer right, but this thing isnt even really presentable il see if i can find a close up pic.
I like it. Just go thorough and make it safe and reliable. Then find big mud hole and toss out your car wash bucket.
From what I understand from my father in law Irish guys don't like to be called "girly men". LOL
Nope check that, save the bucket for the MG and the other BMW.

I like it. It took years to achieve that "lived in" rugged outdoors look, so leave it. Anyone can own a nice shiny Landie. Put your money into making it run well and safely -- and a cup holder. I'd also invest in a set of army fatigues and a beret. I love a man in a beret.
thats AWESOME, We don't see these in CA, USA, unfortunately.
I'd snap one of those up..

Steve. I'm envious. Leave it just the way it is. When the paint peels off, just trowel some matching stuff back on.
Nice machine, I miss my 66 Ser IIA soft top.
Odd. A Land Rover and he doesn't even live in Vermont!
An Austin Gipsy, on the other hand....
Where's John Moore?? This was my last rough and ready LR.
The blue is nice.
I would never have dreamed you could get that style any more. That's the only 4 X 4 vehicle I ever thought I'd like to own.
Absolutely Ace
Looks like a good honest, well used Landie. I like them like that.
got a new bumper for my 5 series sprayed and had a chat with the guy.
He said not to bother stripping the paint on the land rover. paint stripper will warp the aluminium panels. he said just to sand it down to a presentable condition and paint it with a small paint-roller. this would make it look genuine army style.
HA HA, paint stripper will warp aluminium.
Now I have heard it all.
What is the guy smokin?

Ah i dunno, it sounds not too far off the truth cos i know series III panels are pretty thin, and iv seen serious bows in defender panels before. Hes a panel beater in a porsche garage in dublin so i'l take his word for it pooch.
That's cool! I'm a big fan of rough, flat paint on those. Get a gallon of grey floor enamel, some flattening agent, and a small foam roller... :)
some more oul photos if anyone is interested.

I was told that the dagger symbol on the side was an anti- irish symbol used by the british Military but i dunno iv never seen it before. I best take it off just in case.
Its fitted with a 1997 ford diesel engine. runs well.
Its got 2 diesel tanks, one for road diesel and one for green diesel hidden under drivers seat ( agricultural diesel costs about 77cent a litre whereas normal diesel costs about €1.10 a litre)

Very cool!
IMHO just patch any missing paint to prevent rust or repair damage. If the truck looks as if it is still on active duty, it might save you a ticket someday. There are people who collect stock military trucks. FWIW check the age/date code on the tyres as they look to be old. Old tyres can look good, but be dangerous. New tyres will be expensive though, so if newer used tyres are for sale locally, they might be a good deal.
Does the truck have classic Smiths gauges? A picture of the dash would be neat.
These things really do drive bad, the steering lock is ridiculous. Tractors are more comfortable to drive! i think the speed tops at about 55mph.
i sometimes see another guy driving around dublin city with a similar jeep and everyone keeps out of his way! That'd be nice!
The thing with ireland is... its a 1983, it wont be a officially a classic til 2013. and until i have to get it Doe'd (roadworthy test) every year and theyre very meticulous.
road tax is about €300 and insurance is about €60 for the year on my classic policy
When it becomes an official classic, the road tax is only €49 a year and doesnt require a Doe.
Thanks for the dash shots. Looks a bit more modern than I'd have thought. Just like most goverment vehicles, it looks as if they were a bit rough on her.
