Hi,HO Gang
Well I'm back. Really never left been following lots of discussions anyway got the 69 back from the shop. I have offically named it Zippo. She has an entire new wiring harness front to back, dash and gauge cluster from a 70GT and a new windscreen with gaskets and seals. I have way to much money in this thing more than the car is worth so I guess I will just throw some more at her. Next project will be to survey the brakes and give them a good bleed.
Question, been looking for a truly synthetic brake fluid one that will not eat its way to China. Everything I have been looking at says do not get on paint finish. Any ideas??
She is running fine but I do have a gas "smell" need to find were it is coming from and I need to put a fuel filter on, doesn't have onefor some reason.
Does anyone have an extra "cheap" knock off wrench? Oh shucks I will go get a strap wrench to get the wheels off.
till next update

Greg, I would stick with DOT 4 (NOT DOT 3) brake fluid, it's what the car was built to use, and it works well. You won't need to be adding any fluid if the brakes and clutch are done properly, only a flush every couple of years.
When that time comes, just put some absorbent rags around the master cylinders and add fluid carefully, no problemo.
Your gas smell can be coming from any number of places, depending on what end of the car you're smelling it at. If it's at the front, pull off the white/black wire going to your distributor and turn on the key. Check every connection in the fuel lines, and the overflows on the carbs. If at the back, do the same and check the fuel pump connections, if the smell comes from the trunk area, it may be the rubber connection from the filler to the tank. If it's none of the above, you may have a hole in the top of your tank. This is a very common rust-out area.
I have gone back with DOT 5 silicone in every brake system I've had to completely gut and clean out. I'll be doing my 4th car soon and did one motorcycle with it. It's inert, doesn't draw moisture, and I ran one car 14 years with it; no problens what-so-ever. You may or may not come up with a slightly softer pedal than with DOT 4. The car above did, but it got more solid as time went by. The pedal on my MG is not hard firm, but not what you'd call soft either, that's the only compromise I've found with DOT 5.
DOT 5 is the way to go with a new brake system. If you use DOT 4, and are clumsy like me, use a turkey baster type deal or a horse syringe without the needle to put brake fluid into the master and clutch master. Along with Ken's rags.
As far as the gas smell...I had the line from the gas tank to the separator tank come loose in the trunk. Caused the gas smell in the trunk...Good think it didn't blow from the fumes or I would be zippo!
Bob - that same gas line can get old and cracked on the inside. When it does, you will get the same fumes. As far as I know, they are no longer available. If yours is no longer serviceable, your local hydraulic pipe shop might be able to make up a new one for you if you take the old one to him.
That's what I did also. They used the hard pipe and nuts and crimped on new liine.
