I havn't seen this discussed on the forum,my 77 just like the 71 had the cooler by-passed and both to do it have had the hose kinked, not great.
On the 77 the cooler goes underneith,I'm not to happy about that with all our speed bumps theres a good chance of a nasty oil spillage.I'm no where near doing the job but I do like to plan ahead and what I was thinking of doing was replacing the electric stock fan motor with a kenlowe (suck) to the rad and putting the oil cooler back to where it should be on a CB.
what doya think

You would be putting a radiator in front of a radiator. And, compared to the c/b cars, the coolant radiator would then be closer still to the oil radiator.
Yeah, but isn't that what A/C does? Oil cooler's smaller than an A/C condenser....
I don't know the layout of RB cars but on mine the oil cooler is forward of the radiator to the right hand side and hasn't up to now caused any problems.
I wouldnt worry about the factory placement on a RB B
Here is mine. My car is lowered 2 inched and my radiator is actually lower than the cooler. Haven't had an issue yet. (yes there is a plug in the radiator now, there was a petcock the fabricator installed, but I removed it for a plug because the car is so low.

I put mine topside in front of the radiator. No heat problems so far. I also replaced the lower air deflector that has fallen off of most our cars. Granted, mine is a '75, and the radiator is farther back than a '77.
You'd have to hit a bump big enough to fold the valance back in order to damage the cooler. My MGA has run this way for many years without issue. My MGBs and MGC all have them above the panel (in front of the radiator) also without issue.
Les.
The valence is set up nicely to have the cooler mounted below it. No reason why you can't mount above it, but the lower position is high enough to not be a problem and originally the cooler sat inside of a cardboard duct. That is now available in ABS plastic and should improve cooling for both the cooler and radiator.
One other point. If you change fans, make sure that you can still use the "mudshield". This is a stupid name for the blanking panel that goes between the radiator and the engine. It is designed to prevent air from coming up between the two which reduces air flow through the radiator. Not for preventing mud from getting on the motor.
It is a critical component of the cooling system that a lot of people ignore, because it has a stupid name.
kelvin
cheers for that kelvin,I had to look it up caus mine don't exist .
Thanks to everyone for chipping in,it seems the original place is good enough,I've just never seen one close up.I have seen a picture somewhere of one far too low and thought it to be the norm but pauls pic shows it perfectly.
Here is a shot of it without a valance or radiator..and one through the ST valance. It is up pretty high
If you hit something with enough force to destroy the cooler, you are in a lot of trouble, and the cooler would be the least of your problems!

I dont thing the RB cars us spec develop enough power to warrant an oil cooler.

Ruh-roh. :eyepop:
Sometimes it gets hot out, regardless of the car you're in.
I have removed the oil cooler on all my MGBs --as far as Im concerned unnecessary and collect garbage in the oil --never has caused me a problem because they are not there ---my favorite engine builder has a very low opinion of oil coolers on non race street cars..
