I've noticed that on this bit of the pump there is a tiny metal stamping mark. It's nothing more than a tiny square. I've taken a photo and the mark in question is at the bottom of the part.

Is this a mark that is used for re-assembly? Does it matter which way this bit goes back into the pump housing?

Thank you

No it doesn't. Just pop it in.

Have you used a feeler gauge to check the clearance between lobes of the rotor shaft and this? I have just removed my oil pump but havent checked for wear yet. The strainer is dead though... is it possible to (somehow) install a new mesh, or is it a simple replacement?

Richard, if the lobe clearance is too large it is toast, but don't forget the end clearance can be set with garnet paper on a surface plate. In fact that is worth doing anyway, even on a new pump.

The mesh isn't replaceable but the strainer is available for $35.

Yes on the clearance check...it just needed a bit of tidying up with some sandpaper.
Thank you

Ok cool.

The MGOC want nearly double that for their strainer... disgrace! Anyone know of any other UK companies that offer them at a more competitive price?

It seems to me that I recall reading there is a beveled edge on one end of the rotor that gets placed a certain way in the body of the pump. I do not have the manual handy and it has been so long ago that I do not remember exactly. Perhaps someone else has information to validate this vague remembrance.

Jim, I believe the slightly beveled edge usually goes against the cover end of the pump when first assembled, but I've disassembled them and found them both ways and never seen any consequence one way or the other.

The Haynes manual references putting the chamfered edge to the body, but I can't tell which is the chamfered edge...

Rick-
You've got three choices for good prices here:
Call Sandra at the MGB Hive
Russell or Howard at the MG Mecca
Chris at Octarine Services
