Has anyone taken an old dishwasher and used it in the shop to clean parts? We are in the market for new dishwasher but the old one still has some life left in it.

If you have done this what are you running for a cleaning agent?

Never heard of it, but you can be the first. Use concentrated Simple Green so it doesnt eat the plastic of a dishwasher.

*snicker* I used to run parts in the dishwasher when no one was home... The rotor, cap & primary wires work better if you get the "stuff" off. Even ran the carb parts through once. Never got "busted."

I bought an old DW off of Craigslist = the roll around kind with the hose - and put it next to my deep sink downstairs.

I used it to clean disassembled motorcycle engines, though I havent' used it for my MGA yet since the engine was already put together. Generally useful for other stuff too - and keeps the wife happy since you're not sneaking things into the one upstairs.

sTandard Cascasde or whatever works great. Use a lot of it.

Parts come out hot, clean and dry - just make sure you get them oiled or into paint pretty quick before they flash off wiht new rust. If you wipe the part down with alcohol after taking it out, it gets the rest of the water out of the pores and you can hit it with some primer.
