Just did the trans mounts on the 77 "B". Nightmare comes to mind.
First thing I found was a rock sitting on the crossmember. About baseball size, or maybe even larger. Makes you wonder.
Mounts swollen with oil, grease everywhere, no rust to speak of. Got it out, put on new mounts, fought for a couple of hours, and managed to get it back together with only three bolts. One totally would not line up. Tried flipping the mount 180 degrees, no help. Should have test fit to make sure they would bolt in before I started with the crossmember.
The bolts that hold the pads to the crossmember are virtually untouchable. Managed to get them semi-snug with a funny little wrench I found.
Suspect I am going to end up going back in and trying some more. Any ideas on the bolt that won't fit? It is the front one, drivers side.
Talk to me!

The crossmember bolts? You probably noticed there is a plate inside the frame that can move around a little. If you are talking about the bolts that hold the crossmember in place, I'll bet the plate moved on you. The bolts go through the crossmember, into the frame, and thread into the plate. I used a phillips head screw driver to align mine and then carefully threaded the bolts in. Good luck!
Danm, Dave! I did that when I rebuilt my mixer & tried to bolt it back in. 3:4 - I learned something!
Thanks, Bro!
Wayne - Wow. Got some pictures? Sounds distressing."
James, my friend, by the time I got out from under there, I was so greasy I wouldn't even pet my dog! (And he gets worried when I use words like those that he heard!). No pictures, I ain't taking no camera under that thing!
And the bolt I couldn't get in is the one that holds the mount to the trans. Crossmember went in easy.
Brings up another question. Seems like the pictures all show a three part mounting system. Two mounts sideways to the trans, and one really wierd one going down to the crossmember. The down mount and bracket are gone from my car. Big problem, or live without it? Remember, I am not a concours kind of guy. My other car is a rat rod.
Don't know if this addresses your problem... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izuDRlaxf5Y

Wayne I am doing this today.
1. I went to the Y.T. Link supplied and its better than nothing...
( why he has his radio playing in the background is BEYOND me..)Lots of talking but very little info.. but what he does supply is correct..
Its true the actual cross member has a front and a back and if you dont have the stiff arm trans support / tube...... the half moon goes to the front /engine side and the round hole goes to the back.
The inside support is drilled and nutted....... off center...... and I may still have mine wrong. If its not in correct 2 pf the 4 bolts connecting pads to trans will not line up.. I am done for today maybe just an hour maybe longer! I NEEDED to just walk away from this #$%^&*( mess!
I ... cannot find the John Twist Y.T. that must explain this MUCH better..
Blake when I did my search.... all I came up with was Waynes post. It was then that I found the Y.T. link as well. Drill the cross member .. Good idea and I just may do that... I sure hate drilling out holes but its the inside center mount and theres a lot of meat there..
