Hi.

I am about to install paper gaskets on the pumpkin and hubs on a rear axle.
I have heard in the past that some gaskets should be soaked (or moistened) before installing.

My brother forgot to soak a leather gasket on his Morgan and is now redoing the job.

i don't think you soak paper.

I have found that the gasket kit gasket for the pumpkin is quite thin and have found the seal to be better by buying a heavier material from a parts store and cutting my own. I then use small bit of Hylomar on each surface

I don't recall there being a hub gasket...but I'm guessing you might have a banjo rear end/

For rear axle gaskets it depends on the type axle. If you have a banjo type axle don't soak or change the type gasket. The gasket thickness determines how far the differential assembly goes into the housing and thus the axle alignment with the end bearings. Keep everything in alignment by only using the correct gasket.
For a tube type axle where the gasket is only to seal the rear inspection cover then the material really doesn't matter and more than likely will be cork or thick paper to aid sealing. I don't usually presoak cork or paper gaskets and haven't had any problems using these with a bit of gasket cemet or hylomar.

do not know about the hubs but i had the rear cover off my dif and just cleaned the sealing surfaces best i could and doped it up both sides with gasket dressing..[permatex].. do not see any oil drips ... from there
