Our 6 year old Dell desktop learned a new trick this week. If I put in a CD to backup some data, the computer reboots. It appears to come back normally, w/ none of the "Windows was not shut down normally" messages durring the boot process. It does pop up a window when the desktop is back-up that says, Windows has recovered from a serious error, do you want to send a report to Microsoft.
The reboot starts just when it's starting to spin up the CD. It plays normal audio CDs or DVDs just fine.
Any ideas?
Paul

A 6 year old computer! WOW!!! It has not crashed, amazing. Have you tried the usual things like. Disk clean, disk defrag, and disk scan? If not, try them first. That might fix the problem. However, it might be a hardware issue, read "crash warning"
Ofcourse you might want to look into a new computer
P.S. If you can back up your files online ,do before any thing happens.
Good luck
open the case and blow it out. You have a lot of dust bunnies in there. then unplug all the cards, clean contacts, and plug them back in. Then unplug all thye cables and pl;ug them back in. EXcept leave the CD off.
Boot. Any issues?
power off, plug in CD, and try it again. then try inserting a disc. chances are v. good it will work fine now.
Might want to check the drivers. The manufacturer typically will allow a fresh install to over right a damaged driver....FWIW
Happened to me when I tried to burn DVDs. Burning CDs an reading all disks worked fine. Ended up being corrupted software. Could have been from a virus I removed a few days prior, but not really sure if it was related. An uninstall and re-install of the software (Sony) fixed it for me.
