Pertronix has officially recalled their epoxy filled coils that were made in China. For the MGs, that would be part #40611. The coil in question can be identified by a full metal can that extends down and covers the bottom of the coil, just like a traditional Lucas coil. Their older design had exposed black epoxy at the bottom of the coil and those are NOT being recalled. Only the new #40611 made in China.
If you have questions regarding this recall, you can reach Pertronix at 1-800-827-3758.

These are the coils that were offered up starting around last December. The failure happens when they are asked to produce high power output, not under normal conditions. Again, check the bottom of the coil to see if you have an old or new design version. If its the new design and its serving you well, keep using it for now. They don't have new replacements available just yet. I just wanted everyone to know this recall is in progress and being handled as efficiently as possible via pertronix. I'm just stuck in the middle.
So I wasn't going crazy!! I had two back-to-back fail on me. The 3 ohm Lucas Sport Coil (DBL 105) is a nice alternative and I have been using it in the mean time....
Keep us posted Jeff on any developments.. and thanks for the heads up!
John
"In the mean time" should a Bosch coil be substituted, or is one of them, Blue or Red, a better coil in the first place?
Jack
I like the Bosch blue coil as an alternative to the Pertronix or Lucas stuff. They're a trouble-free coil with a multi-decade track record. You can't beat that. The old style Pertronix epoxy coils look to be the "new" replacement, once production gets rolling.
What is the difference between a epoxy filled and oil filled coil? I have the pertronix oil filled ( #40501) that will someday, hopefully sooner than later, be on my B so should I be concerned?
