Hi,
What is the proper technique to change in & out of O/D, some say shift to neutral others depress clutch.
I'm new to the O/D world.
Thank you,
Barry

Switch in or out of OD as needed, no clutch action or going to neutral is
needed or recommended.

x2 Clifton.
You should NOT use reverse if OD is switched on. Normally the lock out switch would take care of this
so it's of no concern. Making sure the OD is off is just good practice. and could save you alot of angst in future.

Use as needed, just flick the switch at will. My favorite is OD in 3rd. very handy in traffic. I dont do anything to clutch or gas, just flick the switch....really like running up to around 4K in 3rd then switching on OD, just feels good...creams my corn every time.

Utilize on a regular basis.

The OD on my '80 only acts up in two situations. One, oil is down a bit. For years it had a minor leak and when it wouldn't engage regularly I would just top it off. The second, if I park the car for an extended period, for what ever the reason the OD becomes irregular on engaging. Driving the car regularly fixes the problem.

I don't bother to put in neutral, but I also rarely engage while accelerating. I typically engage once at cruising speed.

When engaging ease off the gas a little first. It is not recommended to engine brake with OD engaged.

FWIW, going into OD I dip the clutch a little and partially back off the power simply to get a smooth engagement. Going out of OD I fully depress the clutch and lift off the power for the same reason. This gives a smoother ride and doesn't give the OD such a hard time.

No need to touch the clutch at all for OD, but be nice to it and back off the throttle on the upshift - no full throttle shifts will prolong it's life. I even do this on the race cars.

As has been said, avoiding using it for engine braking is a good idea, though not mandatory.

I just flick it on when going up.

But clutch and blip throttle up about 500 RPM when coming out.

Normally you would be decellerating when coming out of OD, and there always seem to be slight shock to the system if you just flick the switch and have an instant 500 RPM or so to take up.

Around town I spend a lot of time and miles in third and/or third over. It is really handy. Flick in and out at will, no problems.
