I am finally finishing the rebuild of my gearbox and am wondering about this lock washer from VB. This part is fitted to the forward end of the third motion shaft. As you can see there is only one set of ears on this part. The original had two sets, each facing opposite directions. One set engaged the syncrhonizer hub and the other locked into the nut. Has anyone used this piece with any success. Will this part effectively lock the nut as the ears would only fit facing towards the syncrhonizer hub and not the locking ring. Any help would be appreciated as I am really wanting to get this thing buttoned back up.

Jim

I used that type of washer on my transmission. If I remember correctly, I placed the tabs towards the sychro and then used a punch to peen sections of the washer up into the spaces in the nut.

The transmission I took apart did not have a washer with 2 sets of tabs and used the above method to lock the nut.
I assumed that it hadn't been rebuilt, but it may have been.

Hey Jason, thanks for the reply. I was beggining to contemplate that as that is the final step for that assembly. BTW, do you remember if the 1*2 synchro hub had any 'free' motion front and back on the shaft? (about 1/8" maybe) The manuals are pretty good as far as what goes where, but never having completely dis-assembled a gearbox it leaves alot to the imagination as to what to look out for. It's just a psycological brain cramp that I get from time to time. Thanks.

Yes, my 1/2 and 3/4 hubs had movement. Espically the 3/4, I was a little uncomfortable with it's movement as it seemed a little much. The 1/2 hub is trapped on the main shaft by the gears around it so I didn't really think much of it.
But since the 3/4 hub is on the end of the main shaft and engages the 1st motion shaft I was worried it wasn't engaging fully due to the movement. I checked it and it looked like it was, and it seems to shift fine so I guess it's ok.

Your right about the workshop manuals. They don't provide the level of detail that I, a first timer, could use.
