i'm renewing the anti rollbar and replacing the bushings. if you look at the attached photo...is that what its supposed to look like or is the larger cylinder protruding from the bar itself part of the old bushing? i can't imagine that the little barbell shaped poly bushing would ever fit in the cylinder, but the cylinder doesn't want to press out either. i didn't want to force either way too hard until i was sure. help!

that doesn't seem to be working. is there a trick i'm missing? forcing one side of the bushing into the sleeve causes the other side to squirt out. over. and over. and over. repeat. heating the bushings makes them a little more pliable. 'lube makes them slipperier, but i haven't found anything that makes them smaller...so they'll fit.
The original bushing would have looked like a rubber ring sandwiched between two concentric metal rings. I think what you are seeing is the outer ring of the original bushing. I broke my old vice getting it out, but it does come out.
What is the distance between the 'barbells' on your new poly bushing. That should give you a clue too.
James;
A lot of the people who comment on this topic have never really done it.
The poly bush are next near fk impossible to install unless!!!!!!
Take a length of nylon cord, like chalk line, and wrap it around one on the mushroom ends of the poly bush. Make sure it is well lubed and the roll bar is in a vise, and just pull it through the hole. I can do it in seconds.
David
yeah, canuck, but the guys disagree whether that sleeve is part of the original bushing or part of the anti-roll bar. what say you?
I was told to remove it from mine when I rebuilt. That it was the outer sleeve of the original bushing that was in place. Since it appeared to be the same type as the rear sway bar, I removed it. It was a pain, I can tell you that but the poly bushings aren't supposed to fit into the sleeve from what I was told but rather into the bare socket. Try using David's suggestion that is what I did.
James - Seems like if you look at the distance between the poly bushing barbells, you'll be able to confirm that it's made to fit the sway bar only and is not wide enough to span the length of the outer sleeve of the old bushing.
Also, when you thing about it, if you did install the new bushing w/ the old sleeve in place, the ends of that old bushing are going to tear up the inside of the barbells of the poly bushing in no time flat.
I see that canuck posted a good picture of his installation method back in August.

PaulP i agree (that rhymed...sorry). thats the way it looked to me, but i "gently" pressed on the sleeve and decided that it would take a lot of force to get it loose and wanted to make sure i wasn't destroying something important before i forced it. the barbells clearly look like they were n't designed for the sleeve.

Instead of pressing it out, pass a hacksaw blade through the hole and carefully saw out a section of the tube, then it's easy to collapse what's left with a big pair of pliers. That's how I got mine out anyway. (The black smoke from burning out the residual old rubber - well that's another story)
Yes!
You must remove the old bush completely, and pull the new poly bush in.
David
What you're seeing is the outer shell from the original rubber bushing. Look at a photo or diagram of a sway bar bushing and it will be obvious.
I don't know how your poly bushings work but I can't imagine they would require the old outer shell of a rubber bushing to still be in place. If they need an outer shell then they should come with a new one.
