Hello all, I have my rear axle out and was wondering what to replace if I have too much backlash. I know it has a good bit but I havent dialed it yet. The rear runs fine and has no noticable noises or vibrations. There was a VERY small amount of metal particles (just enough to see in size) but Im still wondreing if something is bad. The car is a 1971 MGB. Thanks, Mikek

I believe the small metal shavings is normal. Like the shavings in the drain plug of the transmission, Just change the oil at least every two years and you should be fine rear end should hold approx 32oz of 80-w90.

Diff assemblies on MGBs are not known to be a weak spot. I would continue to run what you have unless it exhibits a definite problem, usually characterized by whines and / or clunks while driving. A clunk when changing between forward and reverse, and when starting away from a stop light usually just means that you need to replace the fiber and copper washers (two of each) in the spider gear assembly.

If the backlash is minimal you may be able to remove it by replacing the thrust washers.

The thing isn't going to fly apart if you don't do anything, but if the axle is out it would be a perfect time to replace the bi-metal thrust and phenolic washers. Do the axle seals too. If the pinion seal shows signs of leaking pop one of these in for good measure.

Service the parking brake compensator and replace the cable too.

Check for squished steel brake lines on both side. That happens when a tow truck driver in not on his toes.

When you go back together use a new brake flex line.

All of these parts are cheap and with the axle assembly out the labor is a piece of cake.

Wow, haha........thats a good call on the squished brake lines( LH side happens to be squished). Ditto on all the other you suggested. I will soon be ordering parts from Robert Kirk. Thanks for the suggestions, mikek
