I want to replace the rear stock shocks on my 74 MGB w/ tube type. Anyone have a favorite type that can be purchased from a local supplier like O'Reillys, advance, etc?

Don't do it...Maintain the Armstrong levers...you'll be money ahead.

Bill, you should get plenty of feedback on this as many have done the conversion. This link is located in the MGE library. Good luck with your conversion.

I have a tube shock conversion on my B. I'll be changing back soon. Too harsh a ride.

I just replaced the leaking rear shocks on my 77 MGB with a pair of rebuilt shocks. Simply terrific! Why would you want to install tube shocks when the original style shocks work well?

I did this and just about everything else to improve handling -- then went back to lever shocks.

I think the problem as mentioned before is people rarely have levers that are working properly all the way around. While the tube shocks were better in the corners the ride was too harsh as Dan mentioned.

Most of you folks would not be able to tell the difference if you did not know that they had lever shocks to begin with.

Bill.

If you are considering converting to tube shocks to save some money, don't do it.

The most cost effective thing to do is get the original lever arm shocks rebuilt back to original condition by a reputable rebuilder. You can then forget about them for as long as you are going to own your car.

If you want to change to tube shocks in an effort to improve the handling of the car, that's a different subject and involves a systematic examination of the whole suspension system. If that's the case PM me, and I'll wax poetic about how much money you can spend to get minimal improvements.

The key phrase there was reputable rebuilder. Up until recently, I have never seen a used shock painted black that didn't leak severely. This one shock hardly has any black paint on it, but it doesn't leak.

Bill, get your shocks rebuilt by Peter Caldwell at World Wide Auto Parts. The shocks will actually be better than new when he's through with them. Chris, these won't leak and if they do he backs them with a lifetime guarantee. I've seen his work and his improved seals (a true lip type instead of the original packing type) and installation of delrin bushings really does make the shocks better than new. He can install uprated valves if you like or he even has a fully adjustable type that he's developed.

Peter almost talked me into buying a set Bill, and all reports are that his product works. I just couldn't do it.
