MGB: removing the shifter knob

I am trying to get the nice looking walnut/mg knob off of the shifter from the 76 parts car. It will rotate maybe 15 degrees and that's it

Any suggestions of getting it off without destroying it.

I used penetrating oil (Aerokroil) and it hasn't improved any.

If the knob isn't turning on the metal insert about all you can do is be very patient and keep turning it left and right until it slowly works it's way off. When you get a short turn then binding it't usually something like some kind of crud balling up in the threads and you just have to pissant it apart a little bit at a time.

Make sure there isn't a set screw in the base of the knob. On the later shifters there's a grove in the shifter.

You did back off the lock nut?

yea, if that jam nut aint loosened, it won't budge, thats why jam nuts work!

Mine has a slot on the side... is a setscrew what thats for? Original walnut-ish knob didn't have allowances for that... might be nice tho, no matter how snug my jamnut is, my MG logo always wanders off-square... sunk in on the backside too from my hand... cheap stuff

Thanks for the info guys.
Finally got it off through multiple applications of Aerokroil and twisting it back and forth. JDW had it right,

Thanks again.
