I am removing my Zenith Carb in order to rebuild it.

After removing all of the hoses and bolts the only thing keeping the carb on the car is this blue cable.

I"m guessing it is maybe the clutch or throttle. Does any one know how to detach the cable from the carb? It appears as though it operates several different valves and if I take it off I want to be sure I know how to put it back on.

Thanks

Loosen the bottom locknut and turn the cam counterclockwise to remove from the bracket.
when whole cable is free from bracket, remove "keeper" from other end of cam.

That is the throttle cable. If you rotate the cable till it lines up with the slot in the throttle actuator, it will slide right out. The cable has a round cast piece on the end of it. Made very similar to a bicycle brake cable on the end.

You can paint the threads w/black marker so you put it back the same place (if you like it where it is).
Also consider replacing that broken washer on the dashpot.

Austin,

I sent you some info via email. May help with taming the Zenith.

Unless your memory is much better than mine, don't take it all apart until you have received the rebuild kit. Put old newspaper on a card table or a table you can use for 3 to 5 hours, and slowly take it apart, keeping all the little screws washers, o-rings, and gaskets that go together in order. I did it once, and about 6 years later, my son did it once, and it lasted at least 6 to 8 years until last summer when a tear in the diaphram forced another rebuild which was done by the mechanic who found the tear. Just take your time and take notes if necessary in order to get it all back together right. Don't forget to replace the rubber o-ring on the very bottom of the carb. It's out of sight, and it's easy for it to be "out of mind". There are a lot of o-rings of various sizes, and you need to keep the old ones around to make sure you get the correct size replacement.

Was your car running very rich? It appears that your course and fine idle/air mixture screws are turned in all the way rich.

Austin,

Here's some potentially useful info:

John Twist instructions and disassembly info (scroll all the way down): http://universitymotorsltd.com/qa-display.php/1018

Also, review these John Twist videos on the Stromberg:

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTFbwcxc5eI
Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ1nr1WroRs

and also look at this: http://www.sterlingbritishmotoringsociety.org/files/choke.pdf which will help with the choke.

That should help figure this out.

Simon
