I've got a 1980 B. The clock doesn't work ( do any) Can I replace the clock with an amp guage from an earlier B? If yes, how? Thanks

The ammeter is more trouble than it is worth and a possible source of future problems because ALL the current to charge the battery must pass through the ammeter. A bad connection at any of the connections in this circiut can cause your battery to go dead or even cause an electrical fire. The ammeter would have to spliced into the #10 brown wire running from your alt to the starter. Additional wire would have to be added to run the wire into the passenger compartment. A voltmeter would be a better choice and does not modify the existing wiring. It would require a apir of new wires but would not have the load on them like the wires for the ammeter would and less chance of a fire

I am with Gerry, all the current does run thru it, and if it screws up, you have a problem!! If I was gonna do that, I would have British Wiring build me a custom harness!! By the way, an ampmeter is a great thing!! Just not one that is stuck in!! I do like JDW's idea!! He has a voltmeter (not nearly as good, but waaaaaaaaaay easier) that he plugs into his cigarette lighter!!

That voltmeter is digital and a hell of a lot more accurate than any annalog jobbie you could mount in a car. I poke it in to check that battery before start up. I can see my voltage drop while the starter is operation, and my alternator output when she starts. then I remove it and stick the lighter back in the hole.I can also use that particular one, along with a cable that came with it, to monitor a dead battery while I charge it up with my alternator through our cigarette lighters.

Auto Zone and others have a smaller, more simple, but just as accurate item for about $10.00.

John, if you get a chance, grab me one of the good ones like you have and I will pay you for it and pick it up in St Loooie!!

I think I got that thing from JC Whitney, it's been a while and it's too late to get one from them in time now. The Auto Zone one is just as accuate, just doesn't have a charging cable which I never use anyway. There will probably be an AZ not far from your hotel.

Gary, in the JCW catalog I just got a few days ago, there is a plug in digital voltmeter, pn #81UE3183T listed for $49.95. I suspect that it is the same thing that JDW has

Not it. that's the round one and costs 5 times more than you need to pay for one just as good.
