Due to an unfortunate mis-adjustment of the hood latch after replacing the grill on my 74 B-GT, I am now in the process of replacing not only the hood but also the hood hinge on the driver's side.

The hinge has two bolts on the engine side of the firewall and one bolt on the driver's side of the firewall. This driver's side bolt is fiendishly inaccessible - above the steering column and inside a brace. I can't reach it with any tool I have (and I have a bunch). Does anybody have any advice on this?

Jim,

My car is apart right now so I went to take a look to see if there is a way you can access this nut easily. I took a couple of photos for you so you can see what you're dealing with.

Man. this is going to be tough to get to with the fascia (dash) in place. In one photo, you can see the nut through the access hole straight on. I wonder if you drop the steering column, if you might be able to reach a long spanner up there from the bottom.

Went through this last year after the hood flew up at speed. Questionable as to which was more annoying, the hood flying up or changing the ds hinge. Remove the tach, then you can access it with a 1/4" drive swivel socket & a long extension. PITA but it works. A dab of grease on the nut before you put it in the socket will make installation easier

Rick and Alex - many, many thanks. Your information is terrific! I can now see a path before me (leading to my local British car mechanic). He will be very glad of this information.

And you can bet that I will be VERY careful in adjusting the hood latch when I finally get the new hood on.

Jim
