Hi Ric

I just replaced the pump on my '78 a couple of weeks ago. You might try giving it a few taps with a rubber hammer. Remember, it's probably been attached to the engine for 30 years so it may not come right off without a little elbow grease. I'm not sure where you got your pump but pay close attention to the spacer that you use. I found that the aftermarket one was twice as thick as the original. Since the aftermarket pump arm throw matched my original, I went ahead and used the original spacer.

Good luck!
Josh

As per Josh. Also the arm is driven off an eccentric. Might help after a gentle whack to push the car in gear a few inches. That would help relieve pressure on the arm...pump handle if you prefer.

thanks for the help, the part is loose of the block and comes out about 1/2 inch but thats it. i will try to rock it in gear and see if that helps. i appreciate the help and advice from josh and kirk's auto.

You may have the actuating arm (lever) trapped between the block and the eccentric on the cam.

uh oh, what would you do in this case, i am about to head out to the garage to try again. tight little spot to try to get your hands into. should i try to pull the clip off the rocker arm pin and go from there?

Try persuading it to go "down." You may be able to turn the motor over and get it "off" the cam and create some room.
