Do these septic system treatments really work ?
Or are we just flushing money down the drain ?
Is there a 'proven' product ?

been using it for 23 years...and our system works fine.......also talked to MSU and they advised me to run the water softener thru the system...thats a 180 from the old theory....they say thats their new study findings....so I am.
If your trying to maintain a healthy tank it works. Bleaches and such destroy the poop eating bacteria and basically it bacteria in a box. Pooper pumper budy of mine uses some foul smelling liquid purple stuff. Does the same thing only faster. If your trying to save a failing leach field then forget it. We use the Rid X on a regular basis.
I use a product called "Roebics Septic Tank Treatment". http://www.roebic.com It's magic ingredient is "K-37". :)
Once a year...one quart per 500 gallon. I have a 1500 gallon tank.
No problems in 5 years (I know..it's still an infant).
Our septic tank guy says to avoid using bleach...it kills the bacteria needed to decompose the waste. He says that dry yeast is just as effective as Rid-X to maintain a "healthy" septic tank, just one packet every couple of months.
yeast?....yup....I love the smell of a fresh made loaf................
So if a person is a homebrewer and has a septic tank, he's in luck.

Wyatt, you sick puppy! :)

It is my understanding that the reason not to pump the water softener thru the septic is that the salt water will eat the baffle in the concrete tanks--bad. very bad...and the salt is just as friendly to bacteria as bleach.
Rid-X, Roebic--use 'em both.
Paul, I talked at length with their (Michigan State Uni) engineer about that and they even sent me the study. So I went with their advice....he says that the country will be making all water softeners drain into them. Who am I to question the University engineers....man I hope they are correct. It goes against all the years of 180 thinking on the subject. I had a new culligan installed this fall and the culligan man even rerouted my plumbing I did with some new code pipe piece and still had it go into the soil pipe...said it was code now.I hope they are correct, I'm to old to crap in the woods in the snow.
I would not only question the engineers, I would question why the builing codes are changing. Is it because of a new formulation of concrete or enviromental concerns? My money would be on the later. Salt and concrete = no good. Either way, I'm glad mine pumps into a seperate drain pipe that goes "over the hill" and not into my septic tank. Cheers,

Paul..... http://www.caitechnologies.com/water-softeners/effects-of-water-softener-discharge-on-septic-systems.htm
