I want to take off the mag rims off my "C" and clean the slines, regrease etc. The front right came off no problem and at the end of the spline there appears to be a rubber grease seal of some kind. The drives side front wheel will slip down the spline abour 1/2" then stops, and any amount of hitting or pulling etc. will not allow the wheel to come off. Could it be this grease seal has some how adhered to the hub spine and the rim, it does feel springy when either hit or pulled? I was going to get a large puller and give this a try when I have time, I do not think that the rim has froze to the sline of the hub.
I also have Spax shocks front and back, does any one know how to adjust them for stiffness?
thanks again

I have no idea about your "stuck" hub but I'd lay off the hammer.
Lots of rust buster stuff and the 50% each mix of acetone and ATF is the cheapest and most effective.
I have destroyed an MGB rear wheel trying to unmate it.

If you have trouble getting them loose, back off the eared knock on, WIRE IT to the wheel splines to prevent further looseing, drive the car slowly with a lot of hard turns....this will break the wheels free from their static locked position where they should then easily slide off.

I have never resorted to useing anti sieze in lieu of grease but happen to think it might do better. Old grease can dry to a very hard and binding product...or so it seems on the splines....I think it attacks dirt and mositure actually which create the "bigger hammer" problem....

Dutchey:

Sorry, but I think you have experienced the classic mistake of putting new wheels on old hubs.

Once you get it off you will see that the splines in the wheel center reach all the way in to the root of the conical inner seat and the spines on the hub don't go any closer than 1/2" to that seat. Worn splines on the hub will wear the splines in the wheel center and eventually the unworn splines on the inner portion of the wheel center will not pass over the worn hub splines.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but there is no "seal" or anything else supposed to be between the wheel center and the hub, just grease. Keep at it with the penetrating oil and hopefully it will come off. Might have to have someone stand on the brakes so you can rotate the wheel a bit at the same time as you pull to get the splines to work out.

It had always been standard to expect new hubs with new wheels and many dealers wouldn't warranty new wheels without new hubs. And new hubs won't fit worn wheel splines, either. (I have a TR6 wheel that is like new with the splines stripped out. Bought by someone who didn't buy a new hub to match. Spun out the new wheel in just a few weeks and had to buy a new wheel and hub the second time.)

The SPAX can be adjusted out as far as you want and it won't do anything after the last step and it won't hurt. As soon as you turn it in it will start to adjust. Recommended settings are usually the second step on the front and the first step on the rear. There are 14 adjustment steps available starting at the softest.

Mark

Agree with Mark and Robert. It will come off but may take some time and patience. Just dont beat it to death. Like a rusted nut just work it back and forth and use plenty of penetrating fluid. Good Luck.
