When I took the head to the machine shop (1965 18GB ) , the pedestal was installed. when I picked it up, it was not. I'm seeing in the parts catalog that there is supposed to be 2 shims under the 2 center rocker pedestals. Is this correct. If so, I'll have to get some. thanks

Yes, youare right. There are shims under no. 2 and 3 pedestrials. I think they were ment to give the rocker shaft some kind of preload on this engines. The OEM part no. was 12H3960.
X2 on what Ralph said. I just went through this procedure as I discovered no shims installed when I took mine apart this summer. There is some debate as to whether or not they actually do anything, but for the marginal cost or effort involved, I don't see where you wouldn't want to re-install them.
thanks for the advice guys. maybe mine were not installed either. I'll be putting them back during assembly.
The factory had a problem with the rocker shaft "walking" left and right. Their fix was to install shims under #2 an #3 pedestal to apply a slight load to prevent this. It seems to have worked. RAY
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the shims were only installed after a certain engine number, but that the shims were to be retrofitted to all engines when redoing the head, for the above reasons.
