MGB: Rostyle wheel hubcab "motif" question

The small disc which has the MG octagon on it that is normally found in the center of the hubcap of the rostyle wheels is missing from all my hubcaps. I just got a set of four from Moss and now I am looking for advice on how these attach to the caps.

Glue?

Two-sided tape?

Chewing gum?

Looking for guidance here guys...

Thanks,

Ren

Ren:

I used some silicone adhesive in a squeeze tube (basically the same as silicone caulk). Put a piece of blue painter's tape over it to hold it on until the silicone cured. It's been on 9 months without falling off.

I used an epoxy on the center caps for my minilites - a few drops in addition to the adhesive that came on the inner side of the center caps - for a little insurance. Chewing gum goes stale and loses it's flavor over time.

Ren, they seem to disappear depending on how much its driven. I've had good luck recently w/2 part epoxy but eventually
I have no idea how long they will last.

A while back I bought a set of 4 center hub emblems from Moss for my Minilite style wheels (needlessly, because Moss didn't mention that the wheels came with the emblems). If yours are the same as mine—silver octagon logo on black, slightly "padded", then they are peel-off and stick on. If not, I would suggest any sort of glue you can spread thinly so you don't get lumps. Rubber cement would work fine, and spray adhesive would do well too. Avoid double stick tape etc, because you won't get a smooth finish on the surface.

I used Fixture Adhesive.

Mine were like Paul's.....peel and stick. That's all I did - no other glue at all, and they're still in place 8 years later...

They used to be metal, not peel and stick and not padded. More Chinese crap most likely. I had a spare one from my previous B. When I moved the ignition switch to the dash I had to find something to cover up the big hole in the steering wheel cowling. Turns out that the wheel cap fits just fine. See photo.

Mine are painted aluminium. A very small blob of silicon rubber glue in the middle . Not too much or when you squish it in place it'll go to the edges and collect dust.
Been on for years and never looked like moving.

Good question Ren. I picked up a set of these metal hubcap enblems back during the summer and hadn't yet put them on mainly because the ones I picked up were larger than the originals. I guess I'll try 2 part epoxy and tape.

Permatex RTV silicon adhesive and sealant. If you ever decide to re-do the wheels,
rtv will clean up easily, but will hold centers on indefinitely.

Use any kind of RTV, four dots in a square should do it.
Also, scuff the backs of the motif and the front of the caps with a little sandpaper for grip.

x3. (Got 'em from Moss.) I have these on the center caps of the Datsun rims I'm using, as well as on the blank end-caps of the K&N cone filters. They've worked fine for a couple of years now in both environments.

...and Peter Cummins - that's a good idea for the ignition key opening. My switch is going bad, and I'd been thinking of a generic switch in the dash instead of dishing out the $$$ for a new stock(ish) switch and keys. Couldn't decide on what to do about the opening in the cowl....

Hi:

The ones I got are aluminum with a painted logo. There is no "peel-and-stick" thing on the back. The issue is that they are slightly convex metal discs, so that the back side is slightly concave and does not actually contact the flat hub surface - except on the edge.

I think I'll scuff them up a bit and put a hefty blob of silicone glue on them and "bed" them in place that way. I'll pull the hubcaps off the wheels so this can be done on the bench (horizontally) to keep the discs in place until the glue sets up.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks Rick. I enjoy the switch on the dash.

Peter Cummins: that is a drop-dead beautiful dash!

Where did you put the ignition switch? I don't see it in the picture.

Ren - I bought the same ones when I first got my B. Seems like they're noticeably smaller in dia than the inset in the hubcap w/ a smaller logo that stock. I just put one my bulletin board at work, the other 3 are in a drawer. I bought a nice set of complete hubcaps from MacGregor's. To be fair, Moss's full hubcap could be identical to MacGregor's.

I have an aircraft logo company called PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP PRODUCTS....www.planepoop.com. We make those "slightly padded, peel and stick" logo items. I must say, they aren't anything like that "made in China crap", but are absolutely first-class products. They've been tested in Florida sun for years and we've never had any of them come loose, or craze, or fade, etc. We've sold them all over the world and nobody has ever complained or asked for a refund or replacement item. I've been thinking of making a few MG items as well. If anyone is interested, please check out my website and let me know if you think there is a market for MG items....probably Triumph, Jag, etc., as well. Thanks.

Here is what you get from the B-Hive for $6.76 each. The set I got looked very good.

The silicon glue, even when not set, is sticky enough to hold the badge in place. Put them on last thing at night and they will be ready by the morning. I used silicon gasket, because I happen to have a tube open/lft over, but any variety that retains its volume would do. Some of the window/glass silicon glues shrink.

The ones listed for the Rostyle wheels are metal, the ones listed for the Minilite replicas are the "slightly padded peel and stick". Two different parts, two dfferent part numbers.

I recently had to replace a medallion on a rostyle hubcap. I used epoxy. To apply pressure I placed a tennis ball on the prong side of the hubcap and a piece of folded cardboard on the MG side. I then put it in all in my vice and applied some pressure.
