Gentlemen, I've "steered away" from buying fog or driving lamps for my 77 B because I've never really understood how they could be mounted. Has anyone tried drilling into the underside of the big black rubber bumper? I imagine that once they're nicely mounted, the rest is no biggy, but would a typical power drill make its way through this thing or am I looking at renting a Bobcat with a bumper hitch auger attachement?

Check the "search feature" for a really nice airdam/driving light setup, I plan to do this on my 78.

There's a steel box afair under that rubber. You'll have to install riv-nuts to bolt anything to it as it is a closed box. You'd probably have to pull the bumper off, riv-nut it on the back side and fabricate some brackets for the light brackets to mount on. If you go up from the bottom you'll have to cut away a bunch of rubber before you could bolt up anything good and solid. Another way would be to fabricate some brackets that would bolt up on the bumper mounts between it and the body. A pain in the ass any way you go about it.

It's a closed box? Any idea how thick the "iron" is? I'm thinkin this is yet another custom job. I like your bumper bracket idea. Guess the back of my head will be resting on the concrete floor for a while more as I gaze at this late 70's design debacle!

I've fabricated brackets that attached to the same brackets that the bumper bolted to. This assumes you don't mind them below the bumper (which is kind of the only way).

It's plenty damn thick, that's a heavy SOB, but easy to get off and on. You'll want to use metal about 1/8" thick to keep from getting shake in your lights, but that may or may not pose a minor problem too. It's going to move the bumper foreward. There are usually some spacers between the bumper and the mounts and if there is like 1/16" or more of them there's no problem what-so-ever. A sixteenth of an inch difference in the spacing will never be noticed and maybe even 1/8 will be OK.

I see you're like me in that you look at something a long time before making a move. When rebuilding a car, which I always modify in some way, I'll study something for days or even weeks before making a move. Sometimes the solution is very simple. For instance: My Beastie had chrome trim around the windows and chrome drip rails above them, but the rest of the car was stripped of chrome except the back bumper. I wanted her to look bottom heavy and more stable and after quite a bit of study the answer was very simple. I left the chrome off the drip rails. painted the wheels black, added chrome trim rings, and that did the trick.

I always meant to install them on my 77, and never did. If I recall correctly, the LE spoiler (which does wonders for RB looks, if you ask me) has enough room on either side of the cooling slots for lamps. I'd mount them there, going though the spoiler and valance. I think it'd look very integrated, instead of just kind of hung on there, and fog lamps (if you choose them) would be down low enough to cut below fog. Of course, they would be vulnerable, so you'd have to make sure you no longer park by braille.

I've also seen some thinline lights mounted above the bumper, backed up in the grille holes. I don't think that's a good spot for 'em myself, from a usefulness point of view, but they looked pretty good.

In the Brit-Tek catalog they have the spoiler with integral driving lights for $150.
