LA MARQUE, Texas – A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston. The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.

It doesn't look like a smooth ride to the water either.

"So, who's the U-Boat commander?" - Risky Business

Serves him right for using a cell phone while driving.

Sure, blame it on the poor pelican.... A very expensive lesson learned - he will have some explaining to do to his insurance company....bbb

I wonder if the J hooks mashed his rear brake pipes. ;-)

I think that someone should buy it for $500 and use if for yard art, or maybe stick in on top of pole out in front of their used car lot.

Now that was an an idiot! BUT, I find the color combo of the Bugatti interesting. Wonder if that two tone color combo will work for the B???

While looking for the color code, I found some engine specs. 8 liter (488 c.i) W16, (yes, 16 cyl in a W) 4 turbos, producing 987 bhp. And this idoit is on a cell phone behind this??? Well, my sister in law lives in this area. Wonder if I can get her to find this car and "save" that engine for a swap into the B. I promise I won't talk on a cell!!!

Sure it was the sea gull/cell phone. Looks like the middle of nowhere. Don't suppose it could've been a case of more money than driving ability and saying "let's see what she'll do" SPLASH!

Who would hire those guys to rescue a $2 million dollar car. I think I would want professionals that don't add to the damage by dragging it out of the water.

left the engine running - the quote was something like the engine sounded like an outboard motor gurgling for about 15 minutes before it died.

At least the one guy washed his hands IN A MUD PUDDLE before cranking the steering wheel to get it on the truck. That is someone that takes pride in their work :P

This is what the owner does.......House owns Performance Auto Sales in Lufkin. He restores wrecked luxury cars for resale. so he should have no problems saving some money from the insurance to re-build it again.

These cars are even strange-looking in real life.

Recall that the first one completed was totaled at Laguna during a demonstration run at the Monterey Hysterics (sic<G>) a few years back. The factory driver got it sideways at very high speed and wadded it properly.

Good for him, the moron, to bad it doesn't happen to more idiots driving and texting/phoning at the same time.

Top Gear did a flat out test on one of these and had it at 254mph according to the gps readings. :D

More power than an F1 car and it can be driven on a normal licence with no formal training....I guess there won't be too many of these high powered monsters left soon.....

If he's going to use a mobile phone whilst driving he should be relegated to a bicycle until his lone braincell kicks into gear and tells him to turn the damn phone off.
