Since I'm kind of limited on what I can do during the week so I grabbed the rusted old air cleaner and started to see how much rust I could take off with a brass wire brush. The can on the left is the one I worked on and it looks like it will clean up pretty nice. These things are rusted closed really tight and I'm hoping enough WD40 will help me coax it apart.
I was wondering if anyone has tried the Longflo air cleaners listed in VB - Are they worth the money or should I keep working on the cleanup?

Sorry for the blur.

Alan, looks good.
You might try a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acitone. They say that it will unstick rusty nuts & bolts
Might make your work easyer?
Plastic tub
Battery Charger
Piece of scrap steel
Electrolic rust remover! I have done this with the bugeye and it works a treat. Do a google search and you will find tons of info on the details, but it really is as simple as connecting two clamps and mixing a bucket of soapy water.

Also consider Evapo-rust. You can get it at any auto parts store. It's water based and won't hurt rubber, or plastic. Just soak your parts in it for a day, or two, and the rust is gone. I try to keep a supply of parts soaking, so there is always something in the pipline to work on. Naval jelly will do the same thing, but is acid based.
If you are wire brushing parts by hand, that's going to be a hard row to hoe. Use a bench mounted grinder with a wire wheel, or a high speed angle grinder with a wire wheel.
Electrolic rust remover - I never heard of that process before but found some great info on it. Gonna have to try it.
Thanks!
I always liked muriatic acid for derusting small washable parts. It's available at Lowe's pool section. Rinse it off well and use etching primer immediately.
Electrolytic Rust Removal is the way to go! Thanks for the tip.
As an added bonus, the processes also removed the old paint and left the air cleaner in a great condition to paint.
