Mike,
I don't know how to link a website, but go to search member database and put in Bob Muenchausen who is a regular contributor here. He has a very informative website where he covers alternator conversions as well as other things of interest for our cars.
Good luck.
Mark
found the article[s]. thanks
Mike,
ceck out the information on Bob Muenchhausen's page cibolas.net.
Bob is buissy on here under Bobmuench, I think.
Going for an other alternator, check out that it will fit mechanicaly, the electrical rest of the conversion is easy on most of them. Do not prefare an alternator of more than necessary amps, as it will put additional load on the fan belt and the bearing of the water pump. On my B, I installed one Bosch from a Alfa Romeo, the same one is used in Ford Escorts, Sierras and Fiestas. Easy swap, 55 Amps. allways satisfying charging.
On the V8, I tried a Valeo 90 Amps. from a Renult but changed to a 55 Amps. Bosch out of a BMW, as the Valeo alternator killed the bearing of the water pump.

This makes the Saturn conversion very easy: http://www.mgccars.com/100_amp_alternator_upgrade.htm I've bought two from there.
+1 on Mike's comment. I got one there too and it took 1/2 hour to install.
Ralph, the output of the alternator has nothing to do with the drag on the engine or bearing load unless you are are powering a huge amplifiers or the like. The alternator puts out no more amperage than is demanded by the accessories so the load with a 55 amp Bosch alternator is no more than with a 90 amp Valeo. Over tensioning the belt or just time and wear is probably the reason for your bearing failure.
