MGB: Saturn alternator reliability?

Thinking of a new alternator. I have read all the posts - anyone have any long-term experience with the 96 amp CS-130 copy sold by MGCCars.com at

http://mgccars.com/96_amp_alternator_upgrade.htm ?

I am also wondering about who actually makes the copy. Thanks for any and all responses.

It is my understanding that this is a stock GM alternator that has just had the body rotated so that the mounting points match up to the "B". Is this correct? If so is this alternator used on other GM cars?

I've run this alternator on my race car for 3 years, no problems yet. I looked at the Saturn alternator last week at Napa, it looked the same except for the pulley and the bottom hole was not tapped for a bolt. It was about the same price as the one from E-bay, but it didn't come with the connector plug.

I haven't heard pf any complaints. A lot of folks here have made this mod and seem to like it (me included).

Any idea what "CS-130 copy" means?

Also - I have a stock 1980 electrical system - and potential the increased amperage could cause new gremlins to come out of the woodwork?

Tom Fisher of this BBS has some info on this on his website: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~fishertr/alternator.html

Works fine on my GT. I got it from the link you listed.

I liked it so much I bought a second unit to have on the shelf in case the one in my 80 dies.

some pics of the install on my GT at the bottom of the page. Fit great, easy install.

Thanks for the plug, Bob. However, in all fairness, if I were doing it all over again, I'd simply buy the "ready to mount" alternator at:

http://mgccars.com/96_amp_alternator_upgrade.htm

Lot's cheaper than what I went through.

BTW, I've had the Saturn alternator in my 69 MGB for well over two years now and haven't had a bit of trouble.

the CS-130 o.e. on the Saturn is a 96 amp alternator.
Delco numbers 21021310, -1447, -22772, -893, and
-23702.

The Lester number (industry standard) is 8107.

The CS series alternators were a Delco proprietary part and started to be o.e. on cars/trucks about 1984, as cars started having high-draws what with electric fans, big stereos, air-com blower motors and w/s defrosters all running at the same time.

For a number of years these alternators failed regularly because of overloading and high heat. They had high amperage output in a small package. They were never meant to be rebuilt....it took 4 years or so for the rebuilders to figure it out and do a decent rebuild.

Now these days new units are coming from China cheaper than a reman done here. They usually do not come with pulleys when NEW. They are o-clocked at 3:00. They usually used a 5 rib serpentine pulley 62 x 18 mm. Re clocking and changing the pulley to belt drive is not a big deal. For the uninitiated it might be tho.

Got one in my '74 roadster. Has worked great for about two years now. I recommend it. It's this one, all ready to go:

Thanks for all the responses! Any chance it would cause issues with by CEI stock dizzy/ignition?

Don't see how. Voltage is voltage and current is current. The Saturn alternator should work fine.

The alternator will only put out the current required by the car's electrical system. In other words, it doesn't create 96 amps all the time only when/if the car needs that much power.
