MGB: school millage proposals today... total corruption

Nov 03, 2009 07:44:59

and they were kept ultra quite... I read all the papers and watch the local news at this time of year. I did not see it or hear of it. I called my political active friends...nada for them too. I call the lansing state journal, to be sure I am not missing anything...they say nothing in my area if I don't live in the village. I ask my wife to ask at work to see whats going on, she works for the county, her coworkers know nada. So I guess nothing for me to vote on. I give one last try because I know how F-ing vile thses school bastards are,so I call the county clerks office...YUP two school board members AND two millages one to renew a millage that was to expire and one to increase the millage by 2 mill per thousand for a total of 20 mills ie 20 dollars per thousand of assessed value....I am livid...I go down to vote at the township hall, I ask the election officals about the proposals and ask how "they" knew about them...they said(all women) that they heard about it thru word of mouth. I said word of mouth... from whom? they said that their kids were in school and they had friends that worked for the schools. I am PISSED and they can see it in my face.... I said that this was a corrupt way to run an election,... they stare at me...I cast my vote and walked over to the other office where the township clerks office is. I ask the clerk how people were notified of this election...she says she ran it in the local dinky paper, we have three she runs it in the smallest one. I say that is a poor way to run democracy, she says thats all the law requires is one notice. She ran it weeks ago. I tell her that I am very familar with the way the corrupt MEA school systems work and how they try very hard to keep the school elections hush....hush..... She agrees. I tell her how this state is going down the tubes and that everybody is taking cut backs in pay but the GDm schools are getting more. I told her that the next election to contact me and I would pay for the advertising of the school elections, that she claims the township can't afford to spend to advertise. She then proceeds to tell me that when she used to put up a sigh in her yard,(she is the clerk remember) to "VOTE TODAY" thats all it said, and I have seen it. Well the school board/teachers union used to call her up and demand she take the sign down, she also said that they said they spent alot of money on these elections and they didn't want yard signs promoting them....In other words the school board and union was telling her to keep her mouth shut. !!!!!!!! I want these out and out corrupt MFr criminals shut down and put in jail. they are the very same people who teach our children....they are little more than gang members, breaking the law. This is what our state is all over and in all gov't departments.....These are not decent people...they are mobsters.

guess being a self proclaimed hermit has its drawbacks

do you expect them to come knock on your door every time something happens? your ignorance is no excuse

My ignorance??? you are an ass...and a complicent ass to boot.......union thuggery imposed on our old lady township clerk is your idea of democracy...you are the problem....you have sided with the criminal. Did you not read of my effort to be informed........???? I expect as much from you. Your response is classic leftist. I just contacted my state rep....he agrees with my entire opinion. That it is "insufficent" for good gov't. I have asked him to look into improving the system....

Joe, would you think that the agency has the responsibility to ensure that they use the best vehicle they have to inform the public. I thought that was the point of the post. You seem to be justifying a public agency acting is such a way that seeks to skew the results of an election. That is not within their job description. Wyatts point was correct.

more Michigan Education Association democracy in action...............

School Employees Union Shows School Boards the Whip
By Mr. Jack P. McHugh,

Printer-Friendly | E-mail This Article | Comment On This Article

(Note: This item originally appeared at the Web site of Students for a Free Economy, an outreach project of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. The Center also publishes Michigan Education Report.)

In a recent Mackinac Center Current Comment, Us vs. Them: The People and the Political Class, I argued that true representative government has been supplanted by a self-serving, self-perpetuating political/government class and that as a result, the government has escaped the control of the people.

Alarmist? Extreme? Consider this news item: The Michigan Education Association teachers union is involved in a recall campaign against two members of the Wayne-Westland school board following an illegal MEA-inspired strike against the district in October. Among other things, the union held a recall training session at its local headquarters.

The October strike was at root over whether MESSA, the MEA's money machine, would get the district's health insurance loot, or whether school employees would obtain essentially the same coverage from an actual insurer at lesser cost. The Michigan Education Special Services Association is a third-party administrator that outsources insurance underwriting to Blue Cross Blue Shield, then resells the policies to schools.

Making MESSA a bargaining issue is itself prohibited by state law, but set that aside. The deeper meaning of this recall is that a group of secure and well-compensated public employees and their union is using resources that at root are provided by taxpayers to fire the district's managers, who were selected by voters to be the stewards of their school and tax money.

This is not just a cynical manipulation of the political system, it's a perversion of the very concept of democracy. If the union's recall is successful and becomes a common tactic, then we are not just approaching the tipping point where the government class amasses such power and resources that efforts to dislodge them become futile — we will have passed it.

Here's an analogy. Imagine that some residents of Wayne-Westland pooled their money and started a restaurant. They hired a manager, who hired cooks and waiters. Over time the waiters became surly, the food mediocre and the costs excessive. The manager cracked down, and in response the employees fired him.

Whoops — employees don't hire and fire managers. That's the owners' prerogative. Apparently not when it comes to the management of an even more important institution, our school system. Not anymore, that is, if the MEA is successful.

Given the union's deep pockets and rippling political muscles, the recall may well succeed. On Nov. 4 four members of the Reed City school board were recalled after angering the union by voting to privatize food and custodial services. That outsourcing will save the district taxpayers some $300,000 a year, or about $200 per student, as reported by the Education Action Group. (Incidentally, privatization decisions are another prohibited bargaining area, but the House has passed a bill to repeal that.)

Of course, the union will argue that the final recall decision is in voters' hands, so there is no corruption of the democratic process. Sure — the same way a 95-pound weakling going into the ring against the heavyweight boxing champion is a fair fight. Most school board members are political amateurs with little campaign savvy or ability to raise money — their adversary here is exactly the opposite.

Motivated and empowered by its concentrated benefits, the MEA already has outsized advantages over the dispersed interests of taxpayers in regular school board elections. These recalls are showing the whip to school board members who have been mugged by the fiscal realities of the job, reminding them to always place the interests of unions ahead of the interests of taxpayers.

Wyatt,
there seems to be a change in the way voting is done. If the school boards want more money and they get a hint that the voting populace is against said millage increase then they do what our board did. No announcement of any kind for the election. the increase passed with only 9 votes for and none against. there are 3 principals and 6 board members. I wonder who voted? this happened in several towns in our area. I think I may start a movement to vote down the increase and see what they do.

slywelder, I have been trying to stay humorous when dealing with you, it has been the better choice. You don't want me to go after you because I will and there is not one person on this board that will be able to defend you, pals or not. I have an issue that is about their total corruption and I will take on any and every comer. I suggest you stop baiting me now or we could have a real blow out, The unions in this nation are corrupt, they need to be shut down, they are destroying our economy and our rule of law, it's that simple.

Unions created this country !! Corporate America is killing the country.

I love how you hate paying taxes, yet are pissed off when your town can't afford to advertise in the local newspaper

can't have it both ways

LaVerne

It's a sad fact Wyatt that the majority of people just don't give a shit. In our county the ballots are mailed out to registered voters with pre-paid return envelopes. Can't be much easier than that can it. Three school board positions with two unoposed and one who's two contestants spent the best three years of their lives in the 5th grade. Why anyone would want the position other than personal agenda is beyond me.
Three ballot issues, all dealing with extending term limits for local offices. All passed. Morons

Out of approx 130000 voters only 15000 cast their ballots. They just don't give a shit.

Can you say baaa baaaaaa.

LaVerne.........I disagree........information is meaningless if not put into perspective..........."the world will end"..???

Joe, isn't the issue about the county spending, not that they don't have money for stamps, it is the allocation of what they spend it on. The Public management in most areas are very poor managers of resources. They would send all to seminars on some subject or buy a new truck when cash is short rather than use it for stamps in election information. But to think they don't have an agenda when money is at stake is naivete.

I live in California and Arizona. Two very different concepts on how to use resources and spending. California is a disaster area in financial terms and digging deeper holes. Arizona is dealing with the issues and seems to be better managed.

Okey Doaky 6863m...here is where we part company...their issue is about money and corruption.......they are corrupt......you can spread all the frosting on it you want....you can post how some are less corrupt than others.....it does not hide the simple fact that they are corrupt and they are relentless in their persuit of money and power......they are an anathema to free markets and our constitution rights.

Nov 04, 2009 08:01:27
LaVerne

Rather bizzare Wyatolla. Anything to do with raising taxes around here is a huge news story and hotly debated. In your case, union self interest. In our area it's self perpetuating government using our tax dollars to propagandise us.

now to see whats in door number 3 , you must either take this meat cleaver and chop off your little finger or........ listen to an entire side of the album " Helen Ready..... The Las Vegas Years"............

Wyatt, corruption, or bad management is petty much the same. Bad management buys a truck and corruption gives themselves a COLA on retirement benefits and pays 90% of earnings for retirement.

Nov 04, 2009 08:18:48
wyatt

LaVernski almost the same......... but different. In the case of the MEA school unions......the other state/county unions hate them also...They took a pay cut of appx 10 per cent...the teachers unions took a hit of less than 3 per cent..then run a millage proposal to get back the cut and make even more...But in the long view yup agreed... a self perpetuating cancer.

Ricardo...I understand your point....but does management hold seminars on how to game the taxpayer.....do you guys read the articles I post?..

I would wonde how well the SEIU would do with a real deep investigation. It has been a long time since the Government went after a Union. I would bet they are as corrupt as was the Teamsters of old. I find it ironic your concerned about woprking class folks in jobs were they certaintly dont make huge salaries getting ripped off by the union.
