Next project this weekend is putting on new seat foam. I got my 2 back foams, 2 bottom foams, 2 seat webs and 2 back stiffeners from Moss yesterday. The MGB Restoration Manual is sorta vague on this part so...

First: I've been searching from others but I cannot find what exactly to use for contact cement. Does one use a spray adhesive or the "paint" on kind and where can I buy this stuff?

Second: Do you have to glue the foam to the seat frame? I had to peel the old foam off and wasn't sure if that was glue or just old age.

Third: Is the cardboard back stiffener glued to the sides of the back foam before sliding onto the frame? I know the board is screwed to the seat frame at the bottom.

Finally: I don't yet have proper seat covers (emptied my wallet with all the foam) so would it be a bad idea to just purchase the cheapo $20 pair from Wal-Mart to use for now?

Thanks in advance guys and if anyone has suggestions on how to do this correctly it would be much appreciated.

Rebuilt mine last month. My old seat bottoms were not glued but the backs were glued to the stiffeners, and the stiffeners were screwed&taped to the frame. Ijust screwed & taped the stiffeners, and left the foam pads free. They don't move or shift.

Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you a 2MB file of instructions for upholstery installation when I return home tomorrow. They are from VB, color photos and probably the most detailed in print.

You can just use regular contact cement from home depot. It isn't worth the cleanup time for such a small job if you use a spray gun. You can, however, get contact cement in spray cans, cost more but is easier than brushing.

If you will go back and read some of the older posts on this you find that you want to test the seat foam to make sure the bottom does not set to high. I rebuilt mine and after it was said and done I was almost looking over the windscreen. There have been others that have had the same issue and we all used Moss replacements. Some have cut some of the foam from the bottom.

I've been putting some seat foam in the gas tank and some down the carbs.

Chuck, you're killin me.
I'm going to use my original foam. It's in good shape and I like the way it sits.

Check the Chicagoland mg club website..they have the VB instructions there.

I'm hoping my 5'6" height will not require me to cut down the foam. It's a good point though, I'll set everything in place and sit in the car just to be sure I'm sitting where I want to. No doubt it will be better though...right now I can barely see the hood when I'm buckled in, but the webbing was rotted and broken through.

Sorry everyone.....I just couldn't resist! Seriously though, the car runs noticeably better once it goes through the engine.

George,
I couldn't find the files at the Chicagoland site, probably not familiar enough with their method of archiving these. The copy I have is 2 MB worth of all pages and the offer, as above, always stands.

Jason, I'm only 5'8'' and still sit too high. I've got to cut mine, but I'm just not sure how much to take off. Plus I used the rubber diaphram and not the webbing, which also may be higher.

I just finished doing mine in the '64 yesterday. Parts from Moss. Used the diaphram, standard seat foam, modified the squab with extra foam, leather Moss covers. Used Weldwood adhesive in the can. Stripped and repainted the frames. Used cloth hockey tape to attach the stiffener to the frame (no screws on a '64). All in all they came out pretty good. No problem with sitting too high or too low. I am 5'8", average build.
