Does a gasket go between these two parts?

Matt, it seems there would be and I wondered about it as well. Check this link:

There is a gasket between the two parts of the body. Be very careful to pick the correct one form the kit, if applied incorrectly you will block a pickup or delivery hole and you will not get any pressure from the pump. I think John Moore had some good photos of the offending gasket if you search on oil pimps.

There is NOT a gasket between the oil pump never was and never should have one , there is only one between the block and pump, if you install a gasket between the two parts you will increase the tolerances and the pump will not work correct

Nice link, Tom...Chris Betson is a genius.

I'm still a bit sketchy on the gasket...I really worked hard at saving all the bits during teardown. I don't have the old gasket for it, but I don't remember not having one...

Brian, you seem quite adamant that there is not one. I'm standing by on that bit of re-assembly...

I second Brian's comment.

Us Marshalls have to stick together - so I agree, no gasket.

The one referred to goes between the pump body and the block when you install the pump. In that case, it is important to use the correct gasket as the kits do have two.

There was definitely no gasket on my pump when I dismantled it (last week from my '78 BGT).

no gasket there. just remember to fill the pump with petroleum jelly, vasoline, before you mount to block. you will be glad you did. i didn't and well.. the rest is history..

No gasket when I pulled mine yesterday.

Vaseline? Why? for "run in?"

The idea on the vasoline is for the pump to prime faster. Smearing chicken blood on the bumper also helps...

Well, everybody knows about the chicken blood.

DUH! :)

No gasket between those parts but as everyone is saying there is a gasket between the pump and the block. Make sure you pick the right one from the gasket set. There is a choice of two. The smaller one is for the 3 main bearing engine and the larger one is for the 5 main bearing engine.
Don't ask me how I found this out.

Understood...

No gasket between the pump sections...

Use the proper gasket from the pump to block...

Don't ask a New Zealander about his gasket drama...

Use a bit of petroleum jelly before I mount the block (good God-I thought I had issues)...

Chicken blood...

Makes perfect sense!

Cheers to all.
