Sometime back I asked about "mineral oil", what could be used in place of it, etc, regarding shocks. Someone suggested Harley fork oil. I went to the Harley shop, but they only carry several different weights of fork oil that has the swell your seals additives in it. He said if I could come up with a specific weight, he can get the corresponding fork oil.
Anyone have an answer?
And what about hydraulic jack oil? Would that work?
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to get a pint of it at Moss, etc. [Buying from wholesalers will save you a few bucks]. I got mine from a wholesaler in CA that has free shipping for orders $50+.

The only other place I've seen mineral oil in hydraulics is in old Audis. It's called Pentosin but can only be bought from the dealer or from a wholesaler also in CA. It's $25 at the dealer and $10 wholesale for a liter. If you put anything other than Pentosin in the power steering res., the seals will harden and crack, leaking all over the place. Be careful mixing different fluids, you might end up losing your seals. Better off getting the real thing. Maybe someone else will know the exact formulation or type. Good luck.

perhaps this is some thing I missed earlier but why don't you just use the regular shock oil?

Because I can't find Armstrong mineral oil in Pendleton, OR, and I didn't think about putting it on my order list from Moss. Also, I like to be able to buy fluids locally, regardless of which locally I am at.

Motorcycle shock oil is virtually the same as Armstrong mineral oil. Both have seal swelling properties. I have been using 20 wt motorcycle shock oil in my GT without any adverse affects and it is readily available.

Have been using Hyd Jack oil (Autozone) for the last 10k or so. No problems so far and it stiffens them up a tad.

Shaft seals seem to be the big problem. They are rudimentary at best. Shaft/bore dia's are std and have located some C/R Garlock type seals. Haven't had time to fool around with them yet.

My shocks leak enough to be a nusiance to refill. I don't have the fill hole/cap in the top of each. There is a small hole near the top on the side facing the wheel. I have adapted a minute size funnel by bending the bottom outlet of it to fit into the sideways hole but I have to put tiny amounts and wait for it to flow in. Also, air must escape thru this hole for the fluid to get in so it takes awhile. I use Harley fork oil.

I was surprised to hear that mineral oil has swelling characteristics. Thanks all for the lessons!

Hmm, if I understand this right, mineral oil has swelling properties? Maybe that is why stereotypical Harley riders look like that. I have a small bottle in the trunk; hmmm, the possibilities...

I never knew about mineral oil causing things to swell up either. I have learned, too late however, not to mess with Crisco; It's shortning.

Stereotypical female Harley riders are bigger and burlier than male Harley riders. You just assumed I meant male.
