Back in November our Sheriff ( Henry County Virginia ) was indicted along with 19 other sworn officers, employees, and associates of the Henry County Sheriff's Office for being engaged in a continuous scheme to steal narcotics, firearms, and other contraband from the seized evidence property room and people on the street. They took cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, and firearms, and then sold the stolen drugs and guns back into the community. They also stole seized firearms and other contraband for their own personal use and even had a house for officers to have illicit affairs in.
Update to today at 4PM: The Sheriff pleaded guilty in a an agreement to dismiss all charges except lying to a federal investigator. His punishment: Full retirement, probation and no time to serve. Go figure :( :( :( :( :(
And what do you think would have happened to you, or me, should we have committed any one of those crimes above?
Your turn :)

He does Paul -- hurt his back as a State Trooper years ago and draws from that and now a pension for being the Sheriff. The probation is no more than the way you and I have to live ( don't commit any crimes ) . Tough sentence huh :(
Hope the community rises up in outrage and forces the forfeiture of the county pension money. It wouldn't take too much effort to keep pounding on the State judiciary to see that sort of thing through. Surely the guy has ticked off at least one good local attorney who would take on the case partly pro bono. Just remember, the glare of the media lights cause folks to rethink otherwise stupid decisions.
You do realize of course that with the two pensions the good sheriff could easily move to a middle class retirement community in Florida never work again, drink imported beer, play golf all day and generally live the life of Riley off of you law abiding tax paying saps up there in the Virginia hills. :-(
Jack
I agree with Jack. Somebody needs to rise up. Our local sheriff just does BBQ pits, not any drugs, YET!

American justice at it's best. Far more serious to write a few bad checks if you're a peon that deal drugs, steal guns from police evidance locker and citizens on the street.
Was he indicted in Federal court? I can't imagine the Feds letting him off that easy unless there were major problems with the PROOF. We all rush to judgment based on what we seen on CNN and Fox News, but the last time I checked prosecutors still have to prove a defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. And if you think that is easy, just try to get 12 members of our society to agree on anything. I am in awe of prosecutors that try big cases for a living. I would have nothing but a softball sized ulcer after about two cases.
I'm not defending you sheriff, just saying there's usually more to the story. It sure sounds like he got too good of a deal.
I just read a story about this sheriff in the Dallas Mornign News. They said he plead guilty to one charge of lying during the investigation as part of a deal to dismiss other charges, but that sentencing is not scheduled until later this year. The story went on to say that he still faces the possibility of substantial prison time and fines.

Ryan, I understand what you are saying but in this case everyone of them, including the Sheriff, have pleaded guilty and the US Attorney was on TV last night talking about what a sad day it is when something like this happens. There has been a little change since yesterday. Now the news is reporting a sentencing date has been set in August and maybe, just maybe, he might have to serve a little bit of time with the max being 5 years but the other 4 charges have been dropped because he "apoligized". The community, from calls to our local TV and Radio stations, want him and the others to spend a great deal of time and we, the people, have lost confidence in the department. There are 150 members and how did the sheriff and 20 others hide such going on from "trained investigators". Needless to say we are very upset :(
This is what happens when our law enforcement thinks they are "above the law". This sickens me!!
Our "protectors"' although the supreme court says that they have no duty to protect us, and our legislators need to be held accountable in everything that they do.
I'd raise a little HELL in the local media, get a few citizens together, and contact the DA's office and let hin know where he'll be come election time (collecting unemployment) if the proverbial book dosen't get thrown at these guys. Maybe the DA was one of the sheriffs best customers?
Na, we'd be under the jail! Jack forgot to mention that he'd be driving a Jag-u-ah as well as living in FLA. Asses like those give honest public servants a BAD name!
By the way we know the jerk very well and thought highly of him and some of the others we also knew and considered friends. I suppose the hubby and I were bad judges of character but we will be more careful who we befriend in the future :)
This sounds like a job for Bo and Luke Duke to investigage.

Depends on how old the eyes are doing the looking. I find alot of women attractive now that I would not have found so 30-40 years ago. Ofcourse, my chances for getting one are about the same as back then-poor
