price...if lockheed is available, reasonably priced get it, quality is defined by reliability and reputation
From what I understand from the Moss dealer where I got mine, the one that's not Lockheed isn't rebuildable. Of course, if the new Lockheed lasts as long as the old one, I'll probably never be the one to rebuild it...
The aftermarket works great. Get it and spend the rest of your money elsewhere on the car.
Unless the bore is real pitted badly all you need to do is clean the thing, wipe some 220 grit paper around on the inside so it looks smooth, wash it down again with hot soapy water, let it dry thoroughly, stick the spring and plastic in it, followed by a cup from NAPA (about a buck), followed again by the cleaned up piston and cleaned up dust boot. Nothing more than that and for a dollar and the cost of the fluid you have one as good as new.
Jack
yeah, unfortunately it's rusted pretty badly inside. piston also.
Run a hone up and down inside the boore and wire wheel the piston. The piston doesn't have to be dead smooth and a new cup from NAPA will have so much flare to it that it will comply with some pretty big craters in the bore before it leaks.
Jack
ok jack,
i'll take another look at it tomorrow. thanks
can you say the same thing about the calipers or do we have to be more picky with those? i haven't pulled them off yet however i've rebuilt the clutch master, replaced the brake master, steel lines and rubber hoses. cars been sitting for awhile.
The piston pin can also be worn. The end hole in mine was elongated so I replaced it when I rebuilt the cylinder. But the Moss replacement was too wide for the end of the clutch fork, so I had to grind it down a little.
Rich
Be more picky with the caliper pistons. On the clutch the seal slides in the bore, so the bore is more critical than the piston. In the caliper the piston slides in the seal , so the piston is more critical than the bore. Also BRAKES SAVE LIVES so the entire system is more critical.
thanks keith, i'll keep that in mind. what you're saying makes a lot of sense.
